A small local Credit Union has helped a huge income tax scheme get busted just by someone noticing irregularities & doing what they should & checking on it. Seems the big banks are just too busy to care.http://finance.yahoo.com/news/little-cr ... 00735.html
Good deal...here's a less fun incident of when local Credit Unions are vigilant. I had just moved from Boston to Northern Virginia for my job. I was still receiving paper checks at the time as the direct deposit hadn't gone through yet (it usually took 2-3 pay periods with that company before they would have it in place). So I mailed my first two checks in (first 2 weeks pay and a sign-on bonus check). After 3 days, I checked my account and hte money was in there and available to use (no hold placed). So I drove back up to the Boston area to pack up my house and meet the movers so I could get it all down to my new house in VA. I stopped in NJ for gas and my debit card didn't work. I went and checked the ATM inside and it gave me a $0.00 available balance despite me having over $10K available that morning when I had checked. It was past working hours so I had no recourse until the next morning but I obviously needed gas, etc. At the time, I had basically 1 Credit Card with a very small available balance as I had been using it to help with the move waiting for that bonus check to come in). I barely had enough to pay for gas and I ended up driving through the night rather than staying at a hotel because I couldnt afford it without the bank money. When I called the next morning, the explanation was that they had initially had no issues with the checks but an employee later flagged the account as a possible fraudalent check due the large amounts and the fact that they had my address as in Massachusetts so they couldn't understand why I had checks from a company in Virginia. They never called me or even attempted to. They just froze the account in full (those checks AND my other money in there as well as my savings account). All because one idiot thought I couldnt possibly get a payroll check from a company in a state I didnt live in. Mind you, they initially cleared the check and I had had it as an available balance...it wasn't one of those normal 3-5 day holds banks will sometimes put on large checks.
Utter garbage to say the least and I ripped them a new one over the phone as it really screwed me over.
