How old is the Alaska Channing

How old is the Alaska Channing

PostBy: bigboy55 On: Sat Apr 26, 2014 9:37 pm

I have an opportunity to buy a used Channing stove in good condition that has a power vent. There is no id tag anywhere. The person selling the stove has no documentation/manual as he purchased the stove used. On the right side at the top of the hopper is a rotary dial on/off switch. In the rear center of the hopper is a chain driven adjustment device. My concern is the stove still fully supported, is a manual available, and how old is the stove? Could the stove be converted to use a Coal Trol themostat?Any help would be appreciated. The owner wants $900 for the stove and power vent which is used 1 year. Thanks for your time.

They are still manufacturing them, best bet is to contact Alaska. I would wager the coaltrol would be doable.

Yes there was a handle coming out of the center top of hopper with a small chain conecting to a lower to a lower sprocket and spindle. My guess it was an adjustment for the coal delivery system. I passed up purchasing this stove as i was unsure of vintage and btu output. Purchased a used keystoker 90k btu needs the basics gaskets etc . Thanks for the help this forum is very nice.

Dang it. I really wanted to se how that worked.

My dad has had the old Alaska stoker models since the early 80's I think. Both of his use the triburner setup with the carpet plate feed.

Oh well, maybe someone else will buy it and come here looking for help.

I have a channing with that chain setup. Its just a system so you can adjust the feed rate nut on the triburn without stooping down. Sounds decadent, but it is really nice, especially when we are in the temp swings like this time of year.
I have a homemade version of coaltrol. And I split the triburner combustion blower out rather cheaply per some of the mods I read on this forum (all less than 50$)
Direct vent (make sure it is truly stainless steel) is worth 400 (do you really need it for your application? These stoves draft pretty well)
900 seems about $250 high for my market.
How is the ash pan? Glass ? Overall rust? Its probably 30 years old. So assume you'll need a paddle gear box at some point. Yes all parts are available.
If its cherry, $900 ain't bad.

Could you take a few pics of your set-up? Sounds like you got some cool things going on with yours.

That was a stove that someone else owned they "thought" the stove was 10 yrs old. Because the id tag was gone how strange and they had no manual my decision was to look elseware. I found a Keystoker 90k btu stoker in nice shape for 700 needs handle glass gaskets a little paint. Alaska has yet to answer my email but with only description and no s/n its tough besides i was only a potential owner.
