I'm still running..looks like for another week or so as well

PostBy: captcaper On: Mon Apr 28, 2014 7:19 am

Temps just won't warm up here much. Been in the lower 30's nights. Cloudy days often. We got a warm spell a week ago and on it's warmest day the stove went out. Never owning a stoker I thought it reached it's limit. But it got cold that night and I tried to relight it and it wouldn't stay running. Did this 3 times... I emptied the hopper and found 3 stove size pieces blocking the opening. I was relieved it was only that. The pieces got past me opening the bag of Blaschek into a tote to dry. Then scooping it up in a coal hod as well as pouring into the hopper. But then again I'm old fat poor and probably loosing eye sight.
Compared to my hand fired Mark III this Mag stoker has been a blessing during the warming up of spring. As you know the fan shuts off the flow to upstairs and enough heat radiates off the stove during the day so the basement stays good.

I am sure that you felt relieved to have found the problem so easily. With the cool-warm cycles of the change of season the conditions in the stove can sometimes make the "gremlins" find their way out. Glad you are back in order. Mike

Same here. I put the last of the bulk coal in the hopper about a week or so ago. Went and bought 10 bags. Have 3 left. Should I need more, I'll get 20 bags next time.

I have bought an extra ton so far, and might need a little more before the outside temps are right.

This is also the time to make sure your horizontal runs are extra clean.
My stove idling at 100* doesn't have much draft when the outside temp hits 60s and 70$.
I will also be covering the barometric damper with aluminum foil when we hit steady highs in the 60s, just to make sure it isn't easier to exhaust through the hopper.

Failing door gaskets that work fine in the winter will leak when the temperature rises.

Good point. So far so good here. We were at 29 deg. this morning. I have a 6 in SS chimney AAA type that drafts well I guess so that is why I haven't had the alarms go off of smell anything I believe. I am shutting it down am tomorrow as our temps will be getting warm. But I'll fire it up next Thursday as the temps will have fallen good by then.

I am not sure if I want to try the shut down then relight a few days later idea. Sounds like an invitation for corrosion. I am going to let mine idle away through next week to get me through the advertised cool down (late next week), then will probably shut it down for the year.

I don't think you'll get corrosion from that at all. But if it gets too hot in the house you may get a heat stroke. :) By the way I don't think I'll be shutting it down this weekend it's 54 raw and raining here. Up in the mountains here we don't get much summer weather that the southern NH folks get that run the one and only TV channel in NH. I mean I planned some lake dock repairs for today because of their forcast and I don't think I'm getting in that lake this morning.
Cheers
