Went to buy coal today... had called last week for a price and which mine they sell - "Reading, $8/bag".

Got there today it was Blaschak, $7.71/bag :D It's high but I'm on Long Island. By the time I add up gas and tolls to go upstate NY or PA for cheaper it's not worth it. Still way cheaper and warmer than oil or gas.

Is bagged coal normally so wet that the bags leak water? (I'm a newbie at this coal thing)

I see a lot of people complaining about the excessive water, I don't know much about the bagged coal business. What I can tell you is even in the summer time the stock piles of rice will never fully dry out... ever. There will always be some moisture in them once you get about 2 or 3 feet into them. How much really depends on the amount of recent rain. When the winter gets here of course there is whole lot less condensation, it gets frozen so it takes quite a while to drain. Another factor may be is that this is the time of the year when the stock piles will be at there lowest so the coal being bagged may have very little time to drain out at all.

The Blashck is usually very wet as their bag is sheet plastic and does not allow it to dry out, the woven plastic bags will dry over time.

When I buy my bulk rice coal, it's always soaking wet and I've often wondered how much water weight I'm paying for.

$4.50 a bag for Blaschak here. I thought I recalled seeing tiny holes in the bags for water drainage?
