Your Favorite Best Buy Experinece

PostBy: Richard S. On: Tue Apr 29, 2014 9:00 am

Doesn't necessarily have to be Best Buy, it could be any electronics store.

I have two of them, I was there with my Brother and he was looking for blank DVD's and the ever helpful clerk suggested he buy these new latest and greatest discs with double the capacity! You may know where this is going... they were dual layer discs which requires a dual layer burner. At that point in time they were just coming on the market and my Brother did not have a DL burner.

My second story involves my search for VCR with S-video many years ago.

Me: Do you have any VCR's with S-video?
Pimply face clerk: What is s-video?

S-video is not common however if you work in the AV department this is something you should have knowledge of.

It always amazed me that a company would name their stores Best Buy when, IMHO, their prices are always inflated over what can be bought at any of the big box stores or on-line. As you said, you can't go there looking for experienced advice either. You may find some obscure item that can't be bought anywhere else locally but it sure won't be a Best Buy!

They actually had a really good selection of stuff years ago, parts etc. They are geared almost entirely for the regular consumer now. Even when I was looking for something like an internal hard drive they had an abysmal selection but plenty to choose from if you wanted an external one.

Gotta say once Circuit City went under the completion side of the equation kind of went with it.

I still have a old DVD player with S-video kicking around here... the output was better than standard 3wire output cables but then Optical outputs beat S-vid and shortly after that HDMI killed all.

Yes I do buy stuff like TV's and such from them. Everything else I buy online.

I've had really good luck (knock on wood) buying TV's from Amazon. I bought 4 in the last couple of years including a 73" one. You can read the ratings from hundreds of actual users instead of taking the word of some pimple faced geek who doesn't know a pixel from a poodle.

I agree and I do that as well , but you can read all the reviews online from Best-buy (as well as every other online opinion) and walk in and out with my purchase. I don't need or take advice from the store employees, my decision is made before I leave the house.

Yeah me neither. I know nothing about computers .... and back in '05 I knew even less. I let them sell me a Sony Viao for $1,000!! No monitor, no speakers - just a keyboard and the unit itself. :wtf: This thing had a huge program for running all your audio/video stuff in your house ... all stuff I couldn't afford, nor could understand! I needed a computer to get on the interwebs ... and they sold me a damn industrial server .... That was it for me! Haven't been back since.

Mentioned it slightly back in Feb when I had my computer problems.

2 years go we bought a Samsung 46" HDTV from Best Buy. We also did take out the 2 year Geek Squad warranty. We had bought it right after the holiday crazy time when prices drop from all the Christmas hoopla. So this past January we start having issues or at least the spousal unit said we were. I never saw the problem. Until 1 day when the TV would not turn on the picture part. We heard the audio fine but no picture. A quick online check reveals that the backlight went out. We could still see the picture if we held a bright light to the screen.

I was already checking online how to repair and what parts to buy when the wifey says "Didn't we get a warranty when we bought it ?" Sure enough we did. She dug out the paperwork and lo and behold the warranty expired in 3 or 4 days. We quickly made the call. Of course they had to come out and verify the backlight was bad and then order the part but it was all fixed for free. :dancing:

Then they wanted us to renew the warranty. Nope. By the time it goes out again, it will be time for a newer and better model.

Best buy has two different web sites ... when you use their PCs inside the store its different w/higher prices.

Not a big fan of BB...when they have something on sale ya gotta bring in the ad or they'll try to overcharge...

I miss CompUSA. I typically build my own computers and they always had the small bits and pieces I needed. Or if I burned out a power supply, I could go to the store and get one. Now I have to use tigerdirect or newegg and wait half a week.

Best Buy doesn't have any of that stuff in store.

Ha! Those were the days, on Bald Hill Rd. in Warwick. Bought my 1st ever machine from there, a 386dx with windows 3.0. I laugh now remembering the Salesman / Tech that the 80 mb hard drive would last me years of storage....OMG.

LOL... a friend of mine was there and listening to the clerk talk to this older couple as he explained all the whizz bang features are some over priced computer. The clerk went to to do something and he directed the couple to the cheapest model there explaining that is all they will ever need and then some.

I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 with deal of the day, ordered it on line and picked it up at the local store. It went smooth as silk and was also the best price anywhere! While I'm not a big fan of Best Buy this was pretty good.
