Hi, there is a hand fired boiler I am interested in. It has a 9" flue pipe exiting the boiler. Would it be possible to reduce this and go into an 8" chimney pipe? The chimney will be 8" dia. and 32' high. The chimney would be able to handle the 240,000 (and then some) BTU's that the boiler is rated for.

This will be a backup boiler, and will be used in case of power outages, or maintenance, etc....or when I feel like shovelling coal lol.

Thanks all :D

I'm not going to say yes or no but you reduce on the boiler end. ;)

My flue pipe reduces 1" at the chimney from 8" to 7". I haven't had any issues with draft, I do have a manometer so I can keep an eye on it. but so far no issues at all. During the cold winter months I was at .05 all the time, warmer days like today it's -.03

That's a good size boiler but I would not hesitate to try it. If the chimney drafts well, then no problem. Try it under low draft conditions with a manometer to check draft readings.

FYI, My local supply house had a 9'' TO 8'' reducer on hand for 12 bucks.
The 9'' breach on my boiler is oval so I put a foot of 9'' stove pipe on the boiler then the reducer. next the elbow . works good here.

Good luck on yours.
