Chimney Codes?

So I called a Mason today to get a price for a chimney for my KA6. He told me they don't do chimneys anymore because of NY Fire Code. I guess code requires the chimney to be 2" off the house. And he said they would wobble and crack/break the flue. Plus he said he used a triple wall stainless steel tubing. And that round tubing gets much better draft then square or rectangular.

Does this sound right? Also anyone know a good mason if I still want a masonry chimney. (Spencer, NY 14883)

Need to find a new guy, but a round flue is good, as long as its tile.

Time to find a new guy who doesn't sell SS chimneys.

Here is a link to codes for NY state dealing with chimneys. It has everything you never wanted to know about chimneys. An informed consumer is a smart consumer.

I am amazed that some people are allowed to walk around in public and misinform the public, his wife probably said don't worry dear "smaller IS better"... a total d.b. As stated previously find someone that doesn't mind working and not selling, the work to profit ratio is much greater with a triple wall S.S. pipe instead of a chimney that will out live the installer and home owner.

....does he have some Everglades Real Estate he is trying to pawn off as Golf Course approved? What town is he in??????? Thank goodness you have a forum to bounce thoughts off of...this dude sounds like a guy all dressed in a crisp uniform, has a shiney well lettered trucks and not one calais on his hands. Always ask to see the hands...that tells the story....perhaps a limp also, but folks who work for a living have scars, powerful hands and don't shave their legs while kicking back with their feet on a desk. PT Barnum was a showman, but an astute one for sure: There is one born every minute......lucky for you, you skipped that cycle. ALWAYS get a second opinion....on everything. Enjoy getting the K6 assembled and online.

Shawn I am a mason 40 plus years .I have every chimney footer an height inspected .Never turned down .Go to a brickyard an ask for referenceson 3 mason contractors .Meet all 3 see there work .Ask if you can help if you want to save money .You can not beet a masonry chimney as it will not rot lu like stainless piping .Search the forum on stianless longevity .Excuse my typing .Also P M Buffalo Bob on this forum he is another Bricklayer .Take your time with the housing recession a lot of masons are hurting due to housing slowdown .P M me if I can answer any questions . jack

Well actually the 1" clearance rule (not 2",that's interior) has only been in effect for oh, I think 22 years or so. I guess he thinks that is yesterday or something.

Well as I was afraid my original mason can't do the job now. He referred me to another local guy. He should be starting in the next two weeks. Then on to the plumbing.

I'm going to reiterate what was already posted. Do not opt for a SS liner, you want a clay flue and you're good for a lifetime of coal burning in it.

Yup.... I did something similar. I didn't get three quotes, but I went to the local brickyard at 6AM & spoke to the cashier: "I'm looking for a young blood that knows what he's doing but is still young enough to not quite understand how to write a big invoice. Can you point one out when he comes in?" Within 10 minutes I got the nod & I followed the kid out to his truck. Within a couple weeks he was building me a chimney. I watched with eyes open & kept my mouth shut. I got a fair chimney at a fair price. 5 or 6 years later I built a chimney myself for the coal boiler.
