Definitely go for the Kingsford, they are big consumers of #5 anthracite! The coal is an important part of the mix for the briquette.

Probably why it lights and burns better than the cheaper brand of charcoal I tried.fifthg wrote:Definitely go for the Kingsford, they are big consumers of #5 anthracite! The coal is an important part of the mix for the briquette.
That cheaper brand I bought last winter ended up costing me more because of all the pro-pain needed to run the Bernzomatic torch just to get it to light !

I now have a few seasons of running my Pinebarrens Stove and this season was my best yet. I kept it running for 3 months before shutting down for a couple of days of cleaning.
I use Matchlight Charcoal to light my stove and it works great. I can have a three inch bed of anthracite burning within an hour and have my entire stove filled and settled in within 3 hours and it holds about 60 to 70 lbs when full. I burn 12 hours between maintenance but sometimes ash build up will cause the bed to collapse and when that happens I use Matchlight to re-kindle and start a fresh burn on top. Works like a charm every time and even cleans up the unburned coal underneath. This really seems to happen when we get unexpected warm spells.
I keep a small metal trash can filled with a tight fitting lid filled with Matchlight nearby all season long.

I tried a small bag of the match light, but I don't know if it was sitting on the shelf too long, or what. Not much lighter fluid in it.
It would not light with matches, or a gas BBQ stove lighter. I had to use the Bernzomatic torch on it for a while to get it to light - just like I had to do with the cheap charcoal.
Now, I put my own amount of lighter fluid on. Then I know it'll light and have enough fluid soaked in to stay lit.

I've seen some say they use 'lump' charcoal. I have never used it but what is the difference between the 'lump' (I cannot remember the brand name) and Kingsford?.

The difference is that lump is charcoal made of just hardwood scrap board pieces. The (lump) is not ground up and blended w/ additives and then compressed into a briquette.Pancho wrote:I've seen some say they use 'lump' charcoal. Lump burns hotter and get hotter faster than briquettes.

Then I guess I'm dumber than a mineral sprits soaked charcoal brick ! Match light, don't light for me, ... without a torch !freetown fred wrote:WALLY-WORLD self light has been working great for me for 6 yrs--grandpop always used to say--"ya gotta be smarter then what you're workin with"
Course it's not as bad as the time I used my oxy/acetylene cutting torch to light the BBQ when the minister and his wife showed up for a cook out. You'd think that people that close to God would show less fear of earthly things.

I just use crap wood from various projects (2by4s etc) to start my stove ... cost is really zero - waste wood.
I used lump coal in the past if I didn't have any waste wood (now I save enough waste wood).
Couple of bucks up in smoke ! lol
