DEAR GOD WHAT IS THIS?

DEAR GOD WHAT IS THIS?

PostBy: I'm On Fire On: Mon May 26, 2014 6:04 pm

Heard a noise by my computer and found this horror above my head. Before I killed it, it was nearly 2" long. What the hell is it? I think I need to burn my house down now.

Yeah, we have a hive of them monsters somewhere on our property. They come into my workshop all the time and they like to buzz the fluorescent lights. I can hit them with Hornet spray, but it takes a good 60 seconds before they hit the floor. You can see the huge stinger flicking in and out of their butts, squirting poison out.

I'm completely creeped out by it. I had to hit it 6 times with a shoe before it stopped moving. I hope that's the last of 'em otherwise I'm dousing everything with gasoline and torching the house.

It's a Hornet. Make sure you get it before it gets you. If it gets you first you'll regret it, really, really regret it.
Find the nest and wait until dark when they will be all in there. A jar of gasoline and a match will do the job.

I killed a black wasp looking thing about that size with brake cleaner. It died almost instantly. I fear/hate wasps more than anything.

It's a cicada killer. They came out of the ground late last week.

Heh heh, I looked them up as well a couple of weeks ago. They do not seem to be much of a threat to people, but they sure look like they would hurt. There are a bunch of them around here and I leave them alone. Just like the long dangly legged ones that eat spiders, and the mahogany ones. i have never had a problem with them. Now the yellow jackets and bald(black) faced wasps, that is a different story. :o But like everything else, those were northern problems. Seems even the wasps are more mellow down here. Probably not such a rush to get things done before winter, that makes people nasty too.

It was in my house. It was lucky I didn't try to shoot it. And if it is a cicada miller they are a year too late. The cicadas came out of the ground last year.

That thing looks nasty. I used to get tons of yellow jackets and hornets around my house, but since I started spraying the house and outbuildings with cypermethrin they have left us alone.

Not that I am an enviro nut or anything, but just fill up a sprayer with Dawn dish detergent and spray them with that. It is how they kill the big TT loads (bees) that spill from time to time. Bring in the local fire dept and bubble them down. It is not as nasty and toxic as an insecticide, but then it is not as nasty and toxic........on you. Mix it with some water of course.
Anyhoo, having a 2 inch long yellow jacket lookalike in your proximity can be disconcerting, but I learned from taking care of bees that rash actions usually promote a harsh response. Try just leaving it alone and it will go away.

I just encountered one of those minutes ago while cleaning some *censored* off the barn roof. I knocked it out of the sky and stomped it. Looks like a yellow jacket on steroids - been seeing those around here for the 11 years I've lived here. Also seeing giant bumblebees. Maybe there's some genetic testing going on nearby ... :o

Check out this spider! It's a Garden Spider. HUGE! :D

If it's the one with white ring be very afraid, I don't know what it feels like to get shot with a gun but I'm guessing that's a pretty good comparison. I'm not allergic to anything and have been bitten by plenty of stuff. That dam thing had forearm swollen up to the point I was considering going to the emergency room. There was small hole in my arm where it bit me after it healed.

Probably a white-faced hornet, AKA the bald faced hornet. Disturb one of those nests, and you will run a 500 yard marathon ... and they'll STILL get you. Mean bastards. My head was 3" from a huge paper nest of those pricks one day mowing the lawn - I was staring right up the entrance when I turned my head! Didn't see it at first ...

That got an entire can of spray at 22:00 when they were all inside. Next day, there was a pile of them dead on the ground - had to be 500 in that nest. I'd have been dead if they wanted to attack.

Yup, been into a nest of those bastahds.....Make yellow jackets seem like fun. Unless they were in a place we needed to be, we just left the pricks alone.
