This is turning out to be my best summer in a long time. Yep, following skips masterly restore of a rare Herald BB with many thx to sunny (and others), I have been alerted to a #8 that resides in a land far far away.

The place is called Hudson in a state called Maine. I have paid a non returnable cash deposit and paid the asking price. The man is called Chris and he is really a great guy to talk to. I am looking forward to meeting him.
It's a long drive for me but I was inspired to try the excursion myself after reading Ernest Shackletons - Escape from the Antarctic, a feat of navigation that is second to none in the annuals of history.
Once I get North of the great divide called Portland it gets really scary from there. I am bringing along a GPS and it is in the height of summer but still this is going to be a nerve racking trip. I refuse to deal with the Independence Day traffic lunacy but will make the sojourn the week after. Perhaps I will write a book about the trip.
... and yes I have a place to use it...... Many more photos coming once I get my sticky hands on it. I sold my Oliver 77 to pay for it , I am now down to 12 tractors.

Nice find! Hudson is about 2.5 hrs south of me. Enjoy the drive, you won't have to endure the hundreds of miles of interstate with nothing but trees to get to Hudson. Much further north and things would really get scary

I'd break trail for ya, but I'm going the northern route across Vermont/New Hampshire to southwest Maine this weekend. Gotta get those big Glenwoods out of the north woods before the snow flies.

If it's as nice inside as it looks outside, your scored big time for a grand!
Glad you got it newby! Chris seems to be a great guy and he has a very nice home there in Hudson. If you will be exploring Maine in conjunction with picking up the stove I'd be happy to offer suggestions.
Like, don't eat the yellow snow! (Shackleton's first rule of survival in Maine).

Simon,
Before I forget again, your thanks for discovery should really go to Dennis. He was the one who found that stove and told me about it.

Grovelling apology to dhansen for lack of mention on the lead to this wonderful stove. I think the apology should be public.
Oh phooey. I'm happy it stayed in the "family." I can assure you if I could have used it, it would be sitting in my barn right now! I am doing my best to resist collecting though.coalnewbie wrote:Grovelling apology to dhansen for lack of mention on the lead to this wonderful stove. I think the apology should be public.
I hope the big boy brings you many happy BTUs. Won't take much to have it in tip-top condition.
What I REALLY want to find is the upper half of the bottom pans for my Glenwood No.6. The bottom piece isn't so much of an issue with Wilson's Woodstoves making steel replacements but the upper is a bugger. I hope Santa is listening!

For someone who's trying to resist collecting, Dennis is sure good at finding rare stoves !
Wish I could be that "resistant".

So Rob I am taking your advice.
I thought hard about going North of Portland and my courage failed me. I mean are the polar bears mean, I heard rumors of sasquatches, are the roads ashphalted, could I run into Freddy on a dark lonely road - it's all too frightening. So I took the coalnewbie way out.
I sent a bankers check for the stove and wilson is going to pick it up (he has family from Maine and he speaks French and gibberish) take it back to the shop and go over it stem to stern. I hope he removes those thumbprints from the foot rail this time. I mean last time I had to use car wax on them before I could shave in them. Then I will pick up both stoves in about two weeks. Phew, I am exhausted from organizing all of this - I need a drink.
Excuse me whilst I drool with excitement. I wonder if William will come over for the ceremonial lighting? I mean he was the prime instigator. Oh well, I must sign off now as the evening shift at McDs is about to begin and I do not wish to be late.
