Dishwasher trouble

Dishwasher trouble

PostBy: michaelanthony On: Thu Jul 24, 2014 3:52 pm

I have a 3 yr Kenmore -Ultra Wash-Quiet Guard Deluxe model that is blinking like a christmas tree. It is either the control panel or circuit board. Both parts are about $150.00 but I don't want to get it wrong. What meter do I need to test the control board? I don't want to buy an expensive multi-meter with all the bells a whistles just the minimum. Thanks.

And yes I realize I need to buy extended warranty's because everything is engineered to fail within 5-6 yrs. :taz:

First, you have to find out who made it, Kenmore makes nothing except the badge. There are a few appliance repair forums who most likely have seen this problem before. I just fixed my dryer for blinking lights with a 10 cent resistor the factory was too cheap to add to the circuit board. Also just fixed my Samsung refrigerator with a $20 part, the appliance repair people hate Samsung and LG. Blinking lights is most likely a fault code, there is probably a way to get into a diagnostic or test menu by holding down certain buttons. Type the model number in Google and read for a few hours.

I believe Kenmore is now a whirlpool/Maytag product as the parts seem to be universal. I did try a couple of the reset button pushing sequences per a couple web sites but nothing is working. One old post from a "pay to answer" site said if the button reset doesn't work than a control panel or circuit board is needed. I will try an appliance repair forum where the blue collar folks like this place hang out and give the "real truth" Thanks for the heads up. Mike.

MA, on my furnace I have a light that blinks very rarely, BUT, in the owners manual they tell how many blinks equal what problem--yours washer is probably to new to have anything that simplistic--BUT--maybe-- there's something in the manual covering that blinking light situation???????????????????

I found a little pond in the bottom of the dishwasher and that means the drain pump is toast. The appliance link above states this is one of the three main reasons for the blinking lites.

Thanks again Mozz.

Hey FFred, I use manuals for fire starter  I have millions of manuals in this here computater thingamajig.

"Drain pump is not repairable. You must replace the unit."

May be worth fixing, maybe not. Maybe a piece of food jammed the impeller. Sometimes just a power surge messes up the computer and it needs to be reset. Is it the clean light blinking? Any pattern 6 or 7 blinks then repeat? When we redid the kitchen i ended up buying a Bosch, made in USA, engineered in Germany, probably the cheapest one they make but so far so good.

I found a drain pump for 40 bucks, I have not ordered it until I pull the old and check the drain line as well. The "normal wash" and the "cancel drain" buttons are flashing steady no pattern, if I blink every half second it goes away

None of the computer reset sequences work...figures my stove blew a heating coil the week end before Thankgiving. Just another humbling adventure!

Maybe turn of the circuit breaker overnight and see if it resets. Try typing your model number in Google and see any with similar symptoms?

As mozz suggested pull the plug or turn off the circuit breaker. Had a malfunctioning dryer about a year ago and no matter what I did it didn't work, e.g. press button X and Z while spinning around like a top. I guess it "crashed".

The second thing to do is see if you can find the technicians manual for that model. That will give far more information on the error code and the procedures to diagnose/fix it. They aren't for the public but you can usually find them.

Let us know how the "cycling the power" works.

Just disconnecting the pump may or should clear the blinking lights if in fact the blinking is indicative of the pump fault, as your search results claimed.

I bought a multi meter on the way to work and just got in so tomorrow morning will be test day on the drain pump, heater coil, and the control panel. Not much left after that.

Update, the 14 dollar multi-meter proved the control panel had a short...so as Mozz pointed out, (thanks Mozz), the Kenmore haha...clearing throat "Whirlpool" replacement control panel 92.00 bucks and she is back do her job. Thanks all! Mike.
