What? No A-A numbers?
hehe, no, I ruled out all auger feed style boilers b/c the space where I need to put this boiler will not allow for one.coaledsweat wrote:What? No A-A numbers?
And my wife said the other day, "you know, that would be cool to have the boiler automatically feed itself." I told her I didn't think our space would allow for it....... unless I swap the oil boiler and the stoker boiler, then I may be able to put a 55 Gallon drum there..... hmmmmmmm

Put the drum in the coal bin.beatle78 wrote:unless I swap the oil boiler and the stoker boiler, then I may be able to put a 55 Gallon drum there..... hmmmmmmm
That's what most people do, not to save space but because its easier. If you fill the entire bin up chances are a lot of the coal will actually be right over the top of the drum if it gets buried.. whole lot more than a drum full before you have to shovel it.
Don't put the auger through the side of the drum. Instead cut a fairly large hole in the bottom. Get the drum up drum off the ground about a foot with either blocks or something else, What you want to do is provide enough of an angle between the edge of the drum and the auger so the coal on the outside of the drum can get to it to. This will allow even more coal to flow to the auger from the sides of the drum.
You could just leave the drum out until the coal gets low enough to put it in there. In any event you do want the drum because it gets to be pain without one if you don't have the bin filled.
Do you have the name/number/website of that dealer? Is that where you got yours?sandman wrote: vf3000 in nh with the hot water coil under $ 3500

Assuming I could make enough room in the basement for the bin AND the drum, do you have a pic of how this looks like? Is this how you and others do it?Richard S. wrote:Put the drum in the coal bin.beatle78 wrote:unless I swap the oil boiler and the stoker boiler, then I may be able to put a 55 Gallon drum there..... hmmmmmmm

HEART LINE
ROUTE 137 NORTH
JAFFREY, NH 03452

here is my bin, put the auger in the side before I knew better but it doesn't really matter. The drum holds 400-450 pounds of coal but the ash bucket in the boiler needs to be emptied after approx. 200 pounds of coal has been burned so I can't burn a full bin without emptying the ashes unless I want to be shoveling dusty ashes.

The efm stoker can be fed from either the right or left side, where space is a consideration.
How much space is required between the boiler and the bottom of the auger feed?stoker-man wrote:The efm stoker can be fed from either the right or left side, where space is a consideration.
How much does a new EFM 520 cost?

Just take e.alleg's picture for example, you could just build some walls around it. If you wanted to take it step a further as I suggested above where the auger goes into drum you would instead have the entire drum over the auger sitting on the edges of some blocks. As long as you put it high enough the coal surrounding the drum also will be able to get to the auger too addtionally it gets you few extra hundred pounds on top of the auger.beatle78 wrote: Assuming I could make enough room in the basement for the bin AND the drum, do you have a pic of how this looks like? This of course requires a little planning but what you'll want to do is first figure out where you're going to but the bin. You'll want to put it by a window, the window should be as far away from the access as possible and centered as much as possible. Put the drum as close to the middle of the bin as you can. Every situtation is different but if you want to save yourself a lot of work figure out where the best place for the bin is first then see if you can work the stoker into that location.
