I am looking for a electronic actuator that I can run off from a thermostat to pull a chain to open my primary air for my hand fire furnace, it has to be spring return also so that if power fails it will shut, I have looked around but have not had much luck, I found a " 24v 2 Position Damper Actuator w/ arm linkage" from Honeywell which would work perfect, but it says its run times is only max of 20 seconds? Which that wont work, and its 80 bucks lol

Call your local HVAC supply house, they should have a bunch to chose from.

Would a 24VAC push or pull 'linear' type solenoid work? They come in all sorts of stroke lengths. Should be able to buy one as surplus.

Um I would think so, I just need to be able to mount it to something, and it has to pull a small chain to lift a small light flap, and close when power is taken away, preferably by spring for over fire safety

For over fire safety you could mount a snap switch that would cut power to it when the furnace reached a particular temperature, say like 350 degrees on the flue pipe. You don't wanna wait for the thermostat to turn it back down, it could over fire in the meantime.

That 20 seconds is how long it takes to wind/load the spring...it can be powered indefinatly. :)

I posted a Honeywell part no. some time ago for what you describe, price was still $80.
Google "Honeywell M847"

Well I'm only gonna let it open enough to slightly boost the fire, I mean for if the power goes out then my plenum fan will quit so I want it to shut back down

Electrically the actuator is either all or nothing...linkage at all open is how you limit the max open. ;)
20 seconds to charge spring to fully actuated/open w/ near instant closure by the charged spring at power removal.

I found some dormeyer solenoids that I think might work, they are used for outdoor boilers, I just can't find any info or reviews on them

You could use a Honeywell zone valve motor 24v powered open spring close. You would have to make your own mount. Also if you get a whole zone valve take the 4 screws off the valve body , remove the ball from the arm hook the chain on. If that will work, keep you eyes open for someone putting in a new boiler, sometimes they will throw out all the valves and you can get them for next to nothing or free. Never hurts to have spares.

I'm not familiar with boilers that much, do all boilers have zone valve motors?

Could you tell me what I would need to hook this up to a mechanic thermostat? I have one sitting in the basement that I don't use
