I think I got my profile updated lol. I'm in Evans Mills, NY. I like the central heat that one can get from an outdoor boiler. I don't burn the amount of wood that you were but it was so much easier when logs were cheaper easier to get but there are to many guys chipping for the heat plants on fort drum and other areas then the guys selling firewood get priority so the price goes up also. I have set myself up to make it as easy as possible by using a processor and an elevator but then the time factor comes into play so just going to deal with it for one last winter then I can do the conversion to coal. If my figures are right based off everyone's posts and information I hope to burn around 7 tons but wait til next year for that one

CJ,I will try not to cry this winter when I think about you tending your OWB,I do feel bad for you having to wait another yr for the switch to coal. I just goggled Evans Mills,.... You are way up there,I can not imagine tending an OWB in that winter time climate So, 1 whole yr for you to learn all you can about coal & coal boilers & all things coal. I can guarantee that this winter you will have a hard time dealing with WOOD while wishing for coal.

Like I said I've gotten set up to be as painless as possible . My boiler is set up so my wood is inside what used to be my grandfathers workshop and I can feed the OWB from inside. No snow covered wood or being in the wind and elements while loading it just getting to the building which is around 50' from my house. I have already learned quite a bit from managing the stoker to different bin ideas.

Technically the boiler itself is outside so it's still an outdoor boiler

That's one reason I went with an indoor furnace, I don't want to go outside to tend the fire, and the wife refused lol

We have been burning Reading coal that we have been purchasing from F & H Coal who got bought out by Jono Ace Hardware. We like the Reading coal but even tho we buy 4+ tons each time & live within 3 miles of their coal yard,we still pay $220/ton delivered.Today a farmer friend of ours with a Mack truck with a dump grain box drove to Ginther,Pa on Rt.309 to Gale Mining Co. & brought back 10.12 tons of nice clean, uniformly sized, wet but not flooded with water, rice coal.Folks were nice on the phone to me,the driver liked the loading procedure & chatting with them. They can load 1 ton per minute with their chute. I had called Gale on 11/16/15 after a few pm's back & forth with the owner (member fifthg),got directions & the price of $160/ton. With paying the farmer $220 for the truck & the tractor to run the auger, our final cost/ton = $182/ton. Quite a price break from $220/ton. I am anxious to see how the EFM520 likes burning this coal, but will have to wait till we burn some more Reading first.

More pics of the 10.12 tons going into the bin.Did I mention how happy we are to have enough coal in the bin to last into late April/early May ,if the weather is similar to last winter. We are to have heard about Gale Mining just within the past week & very happy with the pricing. We saved approx. $380 doing this vs buying it for $220/ton delivered. If we can do this 2 times /yr,we will likely have enough coal for the yr & save nearly $800/yr on rice coal for our boiler.

I grew up on a farm,we always had that kind of access for ear corn in the corn cribs. It was an easy choice for me when we made our coal bin because I knew how easy it is to control the flow & yet easy to get it out. Removing 1 or 2 of the bottom boards allows it to gravity feed out enough to shovel from & then quits feeding when shoveling stops. I see so many who make vertical slides for their access & know that it is a harder way to do it. When the coal level drops far enough to no longer gravity flow,we can remove all the boards & walk right into the bin.franco b wrote:Nice pictures so I guess it happened.

I always wondered how those lovers worked. I think I will try that on my next coal bin project.
Nice job on the cost savings there W.H.! It is best to get it right from the breaker when you can. A dump truck and a grain auger,,, now you got me think'in...
