Rob, what is a good method for doing that? I do have a digital thermometer and a tried and true dial thermometer. I guess I could have it turn on and off a light while the probe is in a hot water bath.
You got it. Water bath with candy thermometer, etc.

Glad to hear the wider differential is working out. Didn't I suggest it a year or two ago when you were worried about unburned coal?

I might be thinking of someone else. Regardless, it makes sense that a longer average firing time would do a better job of keeping a full-pot fire. Kind of like the Beckett Heat Manager that adjusts the differential to eliminate short cycling on oil and gas units.

My coal consumption averaged 15.7 lbs per day for the past 7 days. A huge improvement over 21.4 lbs per day. Perhaps I should take the differential out to 20 degrees (from 15) to see if there is any additional margin for improvement? But then I don't want to start having outfires.

Generally I'm in the range of 13-16 lbs per day for the summer. I'm fully into the Coal Contractors Stockton Mine coal (and out of Blaschak) at this juncture. Stockton does not appear to be a summer friendly coal.

The ash pan weighs a ton! Loads of partially burned coal edging upon unburned in appearance.

Wow, that a remarkable improvement Larry!! :dancing:
Nice work!! Does it change your mind about going back to Blaschak?
Maybe you'll like how the Stockton burns in the cold weather too..

The winter will tell. Coal Contractors is definitely less expensive than Blaschak in these parts.
