How safe would it be to store 20 tons of bagged coal and if I kept a tarp over the coal how long would the bags last?
Any idea how much space this would take up if I stacked the bags say 5 feet high?
Thanks in advance

Assuming plastic bags I don't see what the problem is, if you're thinking of getting 20 tons delivered in bags why not skip the bags altogether and gwt a whole tri-axle or trailer load? Tarp the whole pile. If you stack them in bags you'll need roughly 40 cubic feet per ton or an area of 20ftX8ft. stacked 5 feet high. If you got I delivered in bulk It would be more like 40x20 ground area.
Thanks Richard. I was just reading that Coal is getting very expensive in China and many countries are importing it from us so I thought it would be cool to have an 8-10 year supply and a hedge against higher prices. I was worried about the bags because I was told they are meant to break down with exposure to light so I didn't know how long they would last under a tarp. The only other caveat is that they are tied with metal ties. Plastic sure would be better. I'm thinking that would be about 1000 bags at 40#. Do u see the price rising?? Yikes that is a lot to wheel barrow into my backyard. I guess a bobcat would be in order.

If you want to buy that much coal, forget the bags and just buy bulk and you will save enough to buy a used bobcat or at least a good down payment. The coal won't go bad in a bag or out, the price will go up.traderfjp wrote:Thanks Richard. Not really familiar with the type of bag they use, I d know all plastic degrades in sunlight... what doesn't. If you tarped it I wouldn't be too concerned about it. As mentioned if you're going to buy that much get it in bulk.
