Anthracite doesn't burn for me well even with wood.

Bit burns well, just hard to get up here. Was going to trek down to Oxford, but only have truck that can haul a ton no place to rent dump trailer here. I like burning coal, had good success in past, just bad smell load this time.

I don't think they would...

When I did a tour at the Black Thunder Mine in Wyoming, they had a spot where employees could come and load up coal "for home use" the Supervisor told us. He said it was the smaller bits of coal that the power companies preferred not to get.

A few moment later we watched as a Mine Truck rolled by carrying 300 tons on its back and some of the load fell off. It is hard to say how many tons that it was because of the size of that truck and having nothing to compare it too, but I figured it was about 20 ton or so, so I said, "You must scrape that up with a grader and haul it to the crusher at the end of the day?" And he said that it was just waste. They figure if it is not running off three sides then the truck is not loaded (and they did this in 4 scoops of the front hoe). :o I said that would heat my house for the rest of my life and he just laughed and said, "I never really thought about it like that before."

I really doubt they would fire en employee for selling that coal...it is probably looked upon as being a fringe benefit.

Reading this thread has made me really look into buying some tonnage of bit. It is easy for me to get bit in Richmond but the cost is comparable to anthracite. Now it is very good bit but I have a feeling the mark up on it is high! I want to get these $99-$100/ton prices! Now that's saving some money on heating! Now that I've learned to burn bit pretty well I wouldn't mind buying a few tons or maybe more. I just need to find the closest mine to get this stuff from any suggestions?

I just got some from a farmer in Cottage Grove MN for $125/ton. KY stoker sized bit. Gets a couple semi loads a year and then resells it.... Looks like nice stuff. We'll see how the stoker likes it. :D

OK well I just got back from 2 suppliers today.

I went to Cobra Mining in Barton, MD, and Country Coal in Somerset, PA.

I was going through this thread and working on a list of Bituminous suppliers. It is a work in progress. If there are some missing, let me know and I'll add them.

Central Fuel, 2454 SW Shadyview Rd, New Philadelphia OH 44663 (330)339-5049 M-F 7-4, Washed Stoker, Lump , $95/Ton pu 2/18/2013
This year has been tough. Washed stoker is not sized and with the loss of dust customers (power plants were shut down) the coal is about 20% dust, 50% usable
(I need pea) and 30% nut. I am working on them to sort their coal, but so far no luck.

Sampson Coal Co.
811 Plum St.
Owensboro, KY 42301
(270) 683-5512

Coal currently from southern Indiana.
Lump & oiled stoker coal for $100 a ton.
Mostly fines after the lumps are taken out, $75 a ton.
5 gallon bucket, $1.
Priced on August 26, 2013.
You can hand pick and load yourself, or he delivers locally for about $25 a ton more. Will of course deliver farther at additional cost.
The mine he is currently buying from raised their prices, and he said that he is trying to keep the price the same, but may have to raise them.
*Note, someone else on here mentioned he was selling Henderson, KY coal. That was one of the union mines sold by Peabody a few years ago to form Patriot Coal which has since closed its Henderson Co. mines.

Makes a very nice fireplace type flame, I have no experience with coal in a stove or furnace. Yet :)

Green Valley Coal outside of Quinwood is selling for $90 per ton picked up. Pickup takes place on Mondays between 8am and 2pm. I don't have any specs on the coal, nor do I know if it's washed/sized but I assume it is.

I found an independent strip mine yesterday selling residential coal for $90 per ton yesterday. It is not washed or sized (run of mine) but I saw no lumps larger than stove sized. Lots of finea, of course. Specs were good: 15,600btu/lb, 0.98 percent sulphur, less than 6 percent ash. Owner was unsure of exact coke button but thought it was between 90 and 95.

I can provide contact info for either though I can't remember the name of the independent mine.

I hit Samson's Coal Yard in Owensboro today. A couple was there hand loading into a 3/4 ton pickup while I had Ernie load a ton of lump with his FEL made of forks so I take a lot fewer fines home than in the past. Another pickup was waiting for me to get out of the way so I didn't really get to visit with Ernie. I didn't pay attention to the actual weight, but he said $80 which I gladly paid to get out of the way. We're supposed to have a high of 6 degrees on Monday so I'll give a report after that on quality.

Just bought a pickup load of bit from a guy who owns a trucking company in eastern WV. He brings it out of southern WV; Huntington area. Price was $130/ton. He's not in the coal business, so no scale. Based on what I've hauled in my truck previously that was weighed, I'd say I got 2500-3000 pounds. Burns well, not a lot of bridging or ash. Good stuff.

Heading over to Oxford today. Coal I got there last week was great but had to pick through to get the size I like. Pile needed shook up. Been working on a new way to burn in my OW/CB. Working good but a couple of mods will make it better! Going to be in the -teens here early next week so I'm stocking up.
