Seems to be a general lack of understanding that coal is a real heating fuel, and that serious users don't buy by the bag. My local TSC has several coal or combination stoves on the floor but no coal to burn in them.Seagrave1963 wrote:The Dover, DE store had only been getting in 1 ton at a time.

How bout that. Coal cost less than pellets. That should turn a few heads.michaelanthony wrote:I should post this in the dirty joke thread, but here goes http://www.tractorsupply.com//ProductDisplay?pare ... tType=Base,

No kidding, according to the fuel calculator wood pellets have approx 30% less BTU's than coal and cost 10% more @ TSC. so everyone should load up on coal, my store let me order so I'm sure others will do the same. God forbid this was one big "type O" at the upper level of management.joeq wrote:How bout that. Coal cost less than pellets. I picked up 10 bags of nut today at the Tractor Supply store near Temple, just North of Reading, Pa. Just for a bit of backup if I couldn't get to my outside coal supply at some point. They had one pallet inside the store , near their stoves. The very nice cashier said I was only the second person to purchase any of it. They sold one bag a couple of weeks ago.
I mentioned that people in NY and New England were going crazy for it. She seemed surprised about that. She did say that they are selling a whole lot of wood pellets. I only glanced at those. I think they had 3 different brands, the cheapest being $5.49 a bag. I was the only person in the store and the manager was hanging around within earshot. I gave a short pro coal talk. 30 % more BTU's per lb. than pellets. Only a few minutes of work a day, etc. She seemed very interested as she is on an oil boiler, like me. She said that she is in a rental and forbidden any stove installation however.
We had a pellet stove for a couple of years, about 10 to 12 years a go. I think that we paid about $500 for it. We sold it 2 years later for $400. After it sold ( very quickly) I learned that the same POS Lowes pellet stove was now $1100 and there was a waiting list months long. A coupe of friends report paying about $2200 for something similar, now. The noise from the blower was ridiculous.

Around here all credible fuel alternatives are sucked dry. TSC in Chester has sold about half a pallet. I wonder how long it is going to take them to work out that they are making no money after shipping to OH or ME.

Shipping doesn't cost anything extra for TSC to add a few coal pallets on a trailer load that has to make the trip out to those stores already any way.coalnewbie wrote: I wonder how long it is going to take them to work out that they are making no money after shipping to OH or ME.
Not saying they won't adjust their coal prices up some higher. But those trucks are going to roll with or with out the coal on them, whether it's somewhere in PA or across the country.
Fastenall does a good business taking common freight along on it's loads out and back to/from stores. No use hauling empty or partial loads, if there can be money made.
On a side note...lots of wood pellets mfg'd in OH WV IN...they might do good to haul back some pellet loads on the empty trailers.
Spoke to the manager at my local TSC in southern NJ. He said he would email the office and ask for a few pallets. Said they sold some last year and it went well, just forgot to pursue it this season.
Please ask your TSC managers, they can be real nice people. He told me it can be hard to light, I educated him. If we help them they will help us. Good to have more than one supplier.
