Most trailer axles are rated at 3500lbs.So you will need a dual axle.Where are you located?

Unless you have a use for the trailer aside from coal I'd bet it'd be in your best interest to have someone truck you 10 tons or so and not have registration, insurance, tires, DOT, brakes,.....and on and on.

Just sayin'

Renting a truck better?
I looked into all these options. My dually can carry 1.5tons+ in the bed (GVWR 11,200#) and I have a coal dealer 20 mins away. I still opted for justify008 to haul me 10tons. It's just not worth it. It would help if we knew where you were. Concentrate on truck depreciation and annual running costs and your total trailer costs.

If all you're going to use it for is the 3 ton of coal you need per year it probably isn't worth it as previously mentioned.
You would be ahead money-wise to pay for delivery of that three ton (or more if you have storage space) or since you are so close to the breaker get a pickup load at a time through the year as you are in that area.

If you have other trailer needs that make it worthwhile to own one, my FIL bought a used 12' Big Tex single axle that I used to get one ton at a time. It is load rated for 2100lbs. The 12' length works well for other jobs like hauling lumber up to 16' long for the pole barn project, a couple scoops of mulch at a time for the landscaping, some topsoil, a couple garden tractors, boxes of cleaning supplies, etc. etc.

One thing that bothers me about it is it has zero grease fittings anywhere on it. I would feel better if I could grease the axle occasionally.

Unless you have another use for the trailer, it sounds like a poor investment. Make a few calls and see who will being you the 3 (or more) tons in one trip for a reasonable cost...then you will be ready for winter. Take what you would spend on the trailer and buy coal with it.

BINGO!!!!! I have a buddy that has a dump trailer that I have borrowed once or twice. It's a beautiful thing to not have to shovel out the trailer! I have more than paid him back with the firewood I gave him over the years, never could convince him to make the move to coal full time, he is an occasional black rock burner.

That dump trailer is kinda like pools, boats and horses.....not something that I want to own myself but its nice to have friends with them that invite us over occasionally in return for a favor or two.

You really never know how many friends you have until you buy a pickup truck! :)

Thats a nice haul for that price!! Sometimes those nasty separations are the best source of bargains but only the lucky ones seem to have them drop in their lap.

About 15 years ago a guy I worked with bought a '67 mustang in very good shape for $1500 from a disgruntled wife. He also hit the lottery for about $100k once and $10k another time. I asked but he would never buy my tickets for me.
