this yr. it looks like some time from the 19th of Oct. to the second of Nov. depends on how quick the Sherrick winter phenom. manifests.

It's flippen 82* today! The tree leaves are still green here in the south. (southern N.E.) I'm not even thinkin about lighting up. (Shouldn't say that. I've been thinking of it alot) It's just too damn hot! Haven't even bought coal yet. But if history has a way of repeating itself, I'll be holding out till Thanksgiving. My little stove requires a little more work, than the rest of you people, so I'll be holding out till the last minute. but if you're in Plattsburg, you'll be lighting up earlier. (Our company test cell is in Plattsburg. On the AF base)

Woke up to a house that was 52° and an outside temp of 36°. Wife looks at me and says,

'The oil tank doesn't have enough oil to keep running it and I'd rather not go buy off-road diesel. Light the stove.'

So, the son and I are in the process of cleaning it out from last season and it'll be lit this evening.

Everything's ready. Pipes cleaned and checked, chimney checked, new batteries in the smoke and CO detectors. Bag of Match Lite charcoal. Picked up another 700 lbs of coal today. Just waiting for the boss to say she's cold.

DW won't let me fire up the wood/coal furnace until the daily highs won't exceed 40deg. It cranks out so much heat that she gets too hot. She doesn't like using "windowstats" so what's a coal burner to do? Once the REAL cold sets in, however, she loves the even warmth provided by the coal. :)

Well, did not get the stove going yesterday. I decided to change the door gaskets and spent the afternoon doing that. I was going to fire it up today after work but after looking at the doors the gaskets never took. So, I've got to strip them off clean the copper RTV off and start over.

Been burning small wood stove in living room on and off since Oct 10th. Wife and dog love it. It does pretty good till end of Nov; then I go to basement and fire up the Harman. Even though wife loves "her" little stove; she has stated that for some reason the coal heat is more soothing and more even.

My stove is alive. Finally got it fired up. Wife was complaining it was chilly in the house and she was tired of kicking the furnace on; we don't have much oil, haven't bought any since 2010 and don't feel like buying any diesel.

Forget the calendar!!!!

Been trying to tell you guys that you light the stove when the wife says "Light it!!" My wife had a bad problem with anemia last winter and I had to keep the house up around 80. Try doing that with oil or any other fuel except coal. We got the problem taken care of but she is still sensitive to being cold.

We lit off on September 13th and I used windowstats and doors. No yo yoing by doing a wood stove in the evenings. A nice even temp which admittedly got around 80 when it was 70 outside but she stayed warm on the mid 30 mornings that we have had already.

Make your life a little easier and nicer. Don't wait till momma says light it.

The Glenwood in the basement has been running on idle since yesterday. I shook it and put about 15 pounds of coal on it. That will last for the next 24 hours or so.
The house is pleasant upstairs in the living areas and perfect in the bedrooms for a good night's sleep. This weekend it is supposed to get down into the 20's so I will open the damper a little bit and let it run a bit warmer.
