Good Morning everyone.
Freddy, you sure know how to have a good time on Friday nights ! I wonder if the repair crew will let you see the melted contactor that arced and made so much noise and light.
'Next time' grab your video camera, cell phone video, or hell, just a regular camera and document the event. Then you can show the non-believers that they are 'full of *censored*'.
The last several weeks have been just jammed with events and excitement, most of it good.
First, on August 19th we had good friends from southern Colorado fly into Flint, where we picked them up, and brought them home to share in a return of their hospitality they showed us in March of this year. We went to the local 'cruise night' in our little downtown, had dinner at the local pub that is on the street where the 'Cruise' event is happening. We drove one of the Pierce Arrow cars to the event.
Thursday, the 21st we trailered the car to Hastings Michigan for a three-day Pierce Arrow tour and show event, ending up at the CCCA national museum, where the Pierce Arrow national museum is located. We had a nice turnout, about 25 cars, plus some of the museum's cars were brought out for some sunshine and exercise. I took my '26 Town Car, [Derham custom Body] for a few mile drive to give her some exercise.
Our friends picked up a modern rental car, and drove sunday afternoon to Madison Wisconsin to visit other friends..
The next week was more car-event stuff. Tuesday afternoon I trailered my '25 7passenger touring car to Auburn indiana, removed the car and put it in a garage. On Wednesday morning, I got up way too early, and took the truck, empty trailer and LOKI, [he loves to travel] to St Louis Missouri to pick up a '34 Pierce Arrow parts car. It's a rolling shell of a car, body, 4 doors, no glass, no seat springs. no rear fenders, BUT: two front fenders that are NEW, I don't think they were ever painted, they are in old primer, and are truely MINT. The chassis has 4 near-mint wire wheels in primer, and the front and rear axles, brakes, brake linkages and cables are all in excellent condition. The wheels, or the fenders were worth the price I paid, and the rest are extras.
So back to Auburn on Wednesday evening, that trip was 6-7 hours each way. Driving the truck and trailer. Thankfully this new to me 2010 truck is a wonderful tow-vehicle, and I just drive it.. and LOKI has the whole back seat and two windows to look out of .
Thursday through Sunday was the Auctions America Labor Day sale/show/swap meet/car corral event. And, well, I had yet another 'weak moment'. I didn't sit on my hands well enough at the auction on Saturday evening.
It goes like this: There were 4 Pierce Arrow cars for auction: a '33 v12 limo, a '33 8cyl 2dr 'Brougham', a '34 4door sedan, and a 1929 8cyl roadster. The roadster and the 4door both were offered with 'no reserve' on the selling price. But the estimated selling prices were fairly high.
I was interested in the '33 2dr 'Brougham', it was reasonably 'e$timated', and it's a car I know about.
The other car of interest was the 1929 roadster. I've always wanted an 8cyl 'open car', a convertible top'd roadster, convertible coupe, or convertible sedan. BUT everyone else in the collector-car world ALSO wants an 'open car'.. As the saying goes: if the top goes down, the price goes UP.
The '29 roadster was a nice, older restoration, still looking pretty nice. But it was suffering from years of just sitting, old gasoline, poor storage maintenance etc. The selling price 'e$stimate' was out of my reach, even the lowest e$timate was a bit too much. SIGH.
Saturday late afternoon, the cars are lined up to go over the auction stage and sell. The '29 roadster is in the lineup and all the 'usual peanut-gallery' of potential buyers are all over it. Many people I know personally and who have deep pockets. And many others I know of, who have even deeper pockets.. I feel like a pauper in their company. These people are looking the '29 over, some just wander off, not interested, some stick around and call their bankers..
When the time comes for the '29 to be started up, and moved ahead several spaces, we all listen to the initial start up of the engine.. and ... well it cranks so slow it's like the battery is dead. It finally lights off and sounds really bad. Rather 'loosey-goosey', bearings clattering until the oil pressure comes up, and the engine is running on only 4 cylinders, and backfiring like a shotgun going off. More of the potential buyers leave, not interested. The car stalls, and won't restart. The auction drivers get a 12v jumper battery-box and jump the 6v car, it still barely turns over, but starts, backfiring more, and moves ahead a space or two, where it stalls again, It won't restart, even with 12v. The auction folks get 5-6 guys and push it up onto the auction stage. The bidding is miserable, very low.
So, inspite of me sitting on my hands.. one hand sneaks out and comes up, I'm a bidder now. And the audience, the bidders in attendance are not bidding anymore, I end up bidding against someone on the phone, and I end up with the car. GULP !
I now own [if I can pay for it !} an 8cyl roadster.
So Sunday morning, I go find the car, with some tools, and start to work on it. I find the starting problems, and fix them, mostly they were loose cables, and poor connections. The engine cranks over and starts. It is still running on 4 cylinders. These cars have a dual point, dual coil distributor, that if one set of points, condenser or coil is bad, it will run on only 4 cylinders. So I check these items, and no, it has good spark to all 8 cylinders. HMM..
I remove the air cleaner, start the engine and AHA !! the 2 barrel carb has a major problem: the inboard throat is DUMPING fuel like a garden hose down the throat, the outboard throat is normal. I slowly slow the engine speed, [close the throttle] and am able to get the engine down to idle speeds, the throttles closed, and only fuel from the idle circuits running the engine.. so, no air through the venturies, so no 'garden hose' of fuel down the inboard throat, and VOILA ! the engine runs on 8 cylinders, I confirm this by shorting each spark plug one at at time, and get a drop in engine rpm with each.
By now, the coolant has warmed up, and the oil is at least not cold, and the engine still shows very good oil pressure, and most importantly: no nasty noises when I started it.. Hmm. I wonder how long it had been since it had been started when we heard it start in the pre-auction lineup ??
Anyway, I put a note on the car for the auction folks to not run the car, since it was damaging the engine to dump excess fuel down the carb to the 4 cylinders.
I got the car paid for, and back home, I'm working on it, fixed the carb, it had tons of dried old fuel residue in the float bowl, and a clogged air-correction jet on the 'garden hose' venturi. So it was not getting any 'leaning air' from the clogged jet. The engine now runs great. It still has some noises, so I'll drop the oil pan and inspect and measure the bearing clearances next.
All in all, I bought a pretty darned nice '29 roadster for about half what it should sell for, and I'm about 95% sure the engine does not have any major issues. the noise does not sound like a bearing, more like a sticking valve or lifter.
Now, more excitement: On this previous Wednesday, I'm out in the shop, which is about 100feet from my Mom's apartment on the back or northeast corner of the house. I'm working on a car. I see an EMS ambulance pull into the driveway and stop, guys hop out.. I walk up and say, I think you have a wrong address, he says nope, recites Mom's name and her location as 'in the apartment behind the garage'.. GULP !! what the H***. ! I've received no phone calls from Mom but I spoke with her an hour ago, when I went out to the shop..
We troupe up to the apartment and here's Mom, in her chair, panting, with her phone in her hand, she tells me she has tried to call me 5 or 6 times and DAMNED SPRINT keeps giving her a 'cannot connect at this time, please try again later' recording. &&%^#%&&EE!!!! Thankfully Mom had one of the 'Life Alert' push-button systems that uses AT&T cell service !
So Mom gets transported to Emergency, she's got a seriously slow pulse, like 25-30. Normal is 70-80. Her bloodwork shows excessive Potassium, which will cause electrical blockage of signals to the heart, and her EKG is also erratic and not normal..
But, she's in emergency with cardiac doctors etc.. They get her stablized and sort out the problems and soon she's 'out of the woods'.
Mom spent three nights at the hospital, I'm picking her up this morning. Seems her Florida doctor had her on Potassium supliments when she was taking a diuretic, but neglected to take her off the supliments when she was told to stop with the diuretic pills. so for over a year she has had very high Potassium intake.. thankfully the 'Life Alert' system worked, and EMS and Emergency knew their stuff.
OK, time to go get Mom from the hospital..
Take care everyone !! I hope your loved ones are OK. and as Freddie says: give 'em a HUG !! They might not be around forever !!

That sounds like a close call, glad to hear she is ok. Nice work on getting that roadster...I have had "deals" work out the other way also, so it is nice to hear that it turned out in your favor.
I got up at 4:00am hoping to get some of Freddy's great B-fast. I waited around til 6:00, then had to get going.
I had to drive across the street and mow our church's grass, and clean up in general. We got ourselves a wedding today!
It made me mad when I get to the front of the church to see someone had uncoiled 300ft of garden hose yesterday, to water all the flowers/bushes, then just left the hose right where they got done using it! Guess who had to roll it up to get the grass mowed I should have lowered the blades and just chopped it all up.
Well, to date, I have Zapped hundreds of European Hornets in my improvised Hornet-Zapper. It is working good. But each day I clean out the dead hornets, and my wife's cats curiosity brings them around when I do this. Yesterday, One cat got a little too curious, when he saw the live Hornets coming and going from the hive entrance. He jumped 6 ft straight up and caught one as it was flying in! By the time he landed back on the shop floor, he was already crying in pain, howling and pawing at his mouth. He bounced and rolled several times around the shop, but he was running so fast I could not keep an eye on him. I could just follow the howling sounds. Lost track of him completely when he made it outside. My wife found him later that evening. He seemed to be ok. That cat just has 8 lives left!

The way I see it, on Saturday you were sitting on your hands so you couldn't bid. Those Friday night beans had been building up pressure for darn near 24 hours..... I think you leaned over to pass gas & that's when your hand slipped out & they took it as a bid. Sha-zam! You own a car! Next time a Saturday auction comes along, go for the fish on Friday!

LOL.. well I hear that money's no good once you are dead, so I might as well spend some and enjoy what it buys. I can always sell a good car, that's all fixed up and running right.

The whole object of the exercise is to die on the day you declare bankruptcy. Broke and worn out you should crawl into the coffin screaming - what a ride. I am most of the way there chronologically and financially. Aint it fun. It's good you have a financial planner he will help you get broke faster so you need to spend quicker. If you really want to get poor quickly, you can just flush the money down the toilet, the trouble is that ruins the septic system. A far faster method is to secure the series of a private wealth management company as they will do a better job. Yesterday I got to deal with another wonder of engineering - a '02 Ford Taurus. Needed a radiator. Simple enough, right? BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, welcome to 21st century manufacturing!! Took 2 solid hours to get the radiator OUT, and even longer to re-install the new one. It has to come out the BOTTOM of the car ....
Maybe we can organize a boxing match featuring mechanics vs. automotive engineers, and send the money to charity?

Got to throw up one of those soft garages. I've got alot of work to do to make that happen. Trying to find a huge drainage pipe right now to extend mine, so I can bury the culvert next to the barn, then maybe pour a pad out there and set up the tent ... then put a lift inside. All huge $$$ and lots of work, so won't be happening this year.

Taylor forklift 7 ton lift even with 8' forks will lift a dually no problem. Losses no height even overnight. $4500 at auction. Who has the money for the other stuff, I don't.
