Someone Ruined a House

I looked at a house the other day. some old guy lived in there half his life, and had a huge combination wood/coal boiler in the basement, piped into the baseboard heat throughout the house. what a cool setup. it did both the heat and hot water for bathing and washing clothes, dishes. even supplied the dishwasher.
the house was built 1950's and originally had oil heat. he was a handy guy and I saw coal and wood there stockpiled from last year, outside and in the basement.
well the guy died a few months ago, and his kids got the house, decided to sell, and the first thing some dumb realtor told them to do, was pull the coal boiler and install a new oil furnace , to "help it sell"
WTH is wrong with these realtors ? now, instead of the heating bill being maybe $200 a month to heat and do the hot water with coal, it will be $1000/month with the oil.
gee, what an "upgrade".
the boiler is a late model Trident, not an old antique. very well built. it's sitting pushed to the side in the other room.
I told the realtor, first thing I'd have to do, it re-install that coal boiler - and that an oil furnace is like not having any heat at all, because it's totally unaffordable. those oil furnaces will eat you out of house and home

ss, just remember, we coal burners are a bit of a strange breed don't cha know. Damn sure not in the majority as far as heating goes. Crap, if everybody did it, prices would be the same as oil/kero/ propane--personally, I hope it stays the way it is--people interested can find answers--ex: this FORUM I damn sure don't try & sell the concept to anybody that don't inquire & that's only if I like them AND they're WAY few & far between

yeh good points...but if I buy the house I have to do the work.
the old setup was sweet, a coal burner's dream ! and free with the purchase of the house.
hopefully they won't scrap it !!

Dayumn FF....you actually found a few that are likeable??!!!!
You are way ahead of me, this year I've only met a few dogs that I like, no people!
I also follow your philosophy, no talking about the black rocks in open society unless they know the secret handshake and bring it up themselves.
The first rule of coal club is that there is no coal club....ya got that!?
Steamshovel....re-install the coal boiler and sell the oil burner to finance a big pile of coal!!

Just 'cause Fred is right about us, doesn't excuse the realtors. They will not hesitate in the least to get you sink YOUR MONEY into what THEY think a house should be to sell it so THEY get THEIR commission.
Over the course of five years I dealt with hundreds of realtors and "real estate sales persons" (who are not realtors) through five states when I was looking for a place where I could move family and business to the same property while selling the house my family was living in. Unless it's a small realty, most of the time, you only get to deal with a real estate sales person, who only took a 3 hour course to get their license, and is actually working off the realtors license (at least in NYS).
After all that, I came to two conclusions. 1. Good realtors are extremely rare (out of those hundreds, only about three would I trust). 2. The average realtor that a person is most likely to have to deal with flunked the school bus drive test !

the realtor thought coal was "sooty" and wood was cleaner burning. I had to inform him, coal actually burns cleaner, and you don't even have to clean the chimney, there's no creosote.
and these guys give advice as to what heating system to install....

that's hilarious....people spend days and $3000 just top put the chimney up through the house so it radiates inside. the jury is out, the American public has been majorly DUMBED DOWN in regards to home heating !!Lightning wrote:Hahaha... my neighbor TOOK DOWN the interior block chimney that ran up thru the center of his house from the basement!!!
