Hi All,
Small Update

So far the Koker Lite has been doing great, house is between 65-70 with the brutal cold weather in Central New York. I am going to make a heat jacket this weekend to capture some of the radiant heat that is escaping the stove; basement stone foundation was 80* this morning.

I will update everyone with results.

A note on the filters, I have a koker 160 and purchase the filters for it at a True Value Hardware store, they had quite the selection and I did not have to travel far to get them. They were $1.75ea. for a 12" x 12".

I built a simple heat jacket tonight and just put it on the stove; only time will tell if it will keep more heat in the stove and not radiate it into the basement.

Thanks for everyone's help this heating season as I learn how to burn coal for the first time.

HI all,

Jacket seems to be working, convection blower is running longer and more often, on ~10 minutes off ~5 minutes. Was 66 in the house this morning and is now 70.

Hi Everyone,

Hope everyone is staying warm!

With the Subzero temps that we experienced this past weekend, the heat jacket was put to the test and has passed. Front of the stove temp has been just over 700* taken with I/R gun, the front door is 560* over the weekend. I called Keystoker today to see if these high temps were okay for the stove. The "boys" at Keystoker stated that the stove was built to handle 700+* and I should have no issue with it. I have approximately 1 inch of ash on grate and flames are touching top of stove with front door open. Draft is steady at -.02 to -.03. Weather.com says it it is -5 with windchill currently and house is a nice 67* and climing.

Will be recommending the burning of coal to close friends and relatives; can't let the secret of true warmth get out to everyone

Happy Coal Burning!

Tim

This was my first year heating with coal, and it was a huge success. Koker Lite kept house 68-70 degrees and went through just over 8 tons of rice coal (mainly because house is not well insulated and Feb 2015 was BRUTALLY COLD). I scrubbed all the sides of the Koker with wire brush, unhooked the flue and sealed up the hopper, combustion fan and flue outlet on stove. I also put some DampRid in the bottom of the stove to keep moisture out of the stove. I have to get some LPS-3 or Fluid Film to spray on the inside today.

Thanks for everyone's help over the past heating season!

Tim

All,

So far over the summer to prepare for the coming heating season, I built a 8ftx4ftx4ft coal bin, it should hold close to 3 ton of rice.

I know the bin looks a little crude, but it only needs to hold coal. Hope to get the first 3 ton load in the coming weeks.

Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Harman SF3500 reduced down to 3 grates connected to its own plenum

Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood

Hummm,,, OSB? No reinforcement along the bottom edges?

I wouldn't trust anything but 3/4" pressure treated plywood fully braced along the bottom. All the force of that 3 tons will be against the bottom of that plywood. Coal is usualy wet when you first get it and OSB will just absorb that water resulting in weak walls.

Maybe I'm wrong?

All,

On Saturday, I took delivery of 3 tons of rice coal. I got the coal from Neumann Supply Depot in North Norwich; The coal was dry with very little dust. Bin is holding great and can't wait til heating season. Price was $225/ton.

I started to hook up the K-lite last night as temps are starting to drop into the 30s and 40s. I have been running the Surdiac the last couple weeks to get the chill out of the house, but with temps dipping lower I want to fire up the K-lite and use the Surdiac as supplement heat when needed. I will be firing the K-lite up tonight.

Here's to another winter of burning coal!

Hi everyone,

I have been up and running for a couple weeks and wanted some advice on my ash. It appears that the bulk coal I have is red ash and I am seeing a lot of tiny clinkers and it looks like coal pieces are fusing together.

Any advice to stop this or does my ash look okay?? I have been using around 30-40lbs in a 24 hrs period.

Ash looks fine. Similar to my Keytsoker 90.
