A good idea someone on here presented for a self conducted chimney inspection is to tie/tape/zip tie your phone to a string and put it in video mode while lowering it into the chimney. You will be able to tell the condition of the liner pretty well from doing that.

Orrrr, if you're an antiquated old fool like myself, a mirror during the day time with no cap up top, works real well from the bottom or a good set of eyes & a flashlight from the top.
