I cemented in the blockers on the smoke shelf. I put 3 bricks on top of the dur-rock to keep them in place as I smooged the goop around the edges.
Question: will the fireplace brick, (which is covered with black soot), from the previous own burning wood stink when I fire up the Vigilant? If so should I scrub her down with soup and water?...the stove will cover the opening about 90%, but it always had glass doors when used for wood burning so any smell went up and out.

Soot should not smell, but creosote will. I would just brush down the soot and vacuum up.

During the summer my chimney will flow in reverse at times since I don't plug it or anything. I do notice an odor fill the basement when it does. I'd clean her up best ya can. :)

The stove is in place and connected to the chimney. The hearth pad is being used this season as a new floor is in the future so who knows what's under the stove next year :? The stove should run much better with 30" fireplace damper blocked and insulated.

A before and after photo.

Update, the flue pipe going through the fireplace damper opening, blocked with cement board and stuffed with insulation. The stove is lit and running great, 315 on the griddle and 146 on the pipe...as the colder weather approaches the temp on the flue pipe will actually drop as the radiant heat of the stove increases as needed.
