put in new & good old bricks. The brick retain clips have erroded away, but once its fired up and filled bricks can't fall in. Still not cold enough to justify firing it up. Day highs stilll hitting high 60's and mornings down in upper 30's mostly. Stilll have to get that new circulator pump and purge system. also changing fill/backflow preventer.... just seems to be turned in too far to be working right. when set at 12#'s system static pressure. Have noticed some sediment I in aerators at faucet taps, so there must be some in regulator by now.

Wow, Think how much coal you could load in there if you stood those bricks up on end like soldiers.

I'm curious.. Do those channels lead down to the ash pan area? is primary air able to come up thru them? Does this unit use a combustion blower?

Wilder,
I didn't know you were runn'in a big Harman. They are realy nice units, easy to tend. I have the hot air furnace SF3500. WAY to big for my house, so I bricked out the 2 back grates, installed them backwards so they don't engage the shaker. Works great, still to much heat for my house though.
Looks like your going to be running a thin-ish coal bed. Is that going to work?

Don...i fill it up higher than the bricks. I have thought about making my own bricks to make it higher. But the water jacket start just below the bricks that are in there so pilling the coal on won't hurt it any, unless the water is gone from boiler. last winter in extreme cold snap we had I was putting 60# of coal in each time tendered at 6am & 6 pm. Active ember bed is about 8>10"" deep when not that cold, when extermely cold I had it 14" deep or better(crowne top) in center of box. run boiler stat at 180* all times, dump stat at 220*ish, 10* differntial. also have an extra s350 relay box on controls set in heating mode to switch primary circulator from coal to oil boiler if temp in coal goes below 165*. if the draft setup had a low volume blower on door it probably would recover quicker from extremely high load demands. similar to an efm520 forced air through coal bed. Thought about doing that also.

You're ready ! I did the same thing, changed all the bricks this season.
And over the summer, I removed my brick/shaker holder, angle ground the brick 1" retaining strip off and mig welded a new pair (old ones corroded - not looking good)
