Thanks Mike
I've been following the photos and discussions in the Southern Slope Section and trying to keep track of what is what

Here is a list of active permits for 2008 of all different types of operations not very accurate as to what is really working though, as the Savitski breaker has been idle for almost 2 years now so I could just imagine what else is off .

mike wrote:Actually the only deep mines working are Kimmels, Little Buck, Alfred Brown, Joliet Coal, Harmony, RS&W, D&D, and Chesnut. S&M might be opened but I'm not sure on that one. The rest are either idled or shut down all together. Summit Anthracite's Brockton Deep mine is shut down for good. FKZ is idled, and joliet will be closing in the near future as the owner is retireing.
S&M Is where Hegins coal co./breaker is getting some of his coal from You forgot Bear gap coal co. That is one that Calvin V Lenigs is getting coal from and You also forgot B & B Anthracite coal co. That is where Superior is Getting some of theres from and who is D&D or did you mean R&D Oh I know a few that is not on the list but Don't tell anybody Shhh ;)

D&D was one of the lucas family mines, shut down in 2006. Tito was active untill 2006 also. There were a couple of mines that just recently shut down, not sure which ones I'll post it when I find out for sure.

I take that back D&D is a lucas mine but it's not shut down it's still going. R&R is the one they shut down. That one (R&R) was owned by David A's relatives.

If they aren't in operation I must of been talking to myself instead of the hoist operator, but then again I've been known to do that from time to time :P

Superior Coal

PostBy: Wood'nCoal On: Fri Feb 15, 2008 9:11 am

After almost a week of burning the red-ash coal from Superior, I am happy to report (after some adjustments regarding the draft and baro on the hand-fired) that I am very satisfied with the results. A major difference in both stoves, a lot less fighting with the Harman trying to keep a good fire going, it's nice to get up in the morning and not have a half-dead fire. The stoker is happier, too. No more unburnt coal-like objects in the ash pan. Fires are burning hotter as well.
Well worth the trip, JC was right. And the red ash makes a nice contrast on top of all the ice and frozen slush out on the driveway.
