Yup, there's just something about coal heat that is awesome...especially once it's built up a bit in the house so you get that heat sink effect where the floors, walls, furniture, etc are all warm. Wood fires are nice but its much more of a wave thing whereas coal heat just radiates.

I believe the word "cozy" is the word for it.

Lit the Harman yesterday, seems to want more air this time, but it got down to 33 this am and the upstairs was 72, wife happy. Thanks for all the experience, strength, and hope of making the house warm WITHOUT the damn heat pump.

I finally got my stove running. It's been up and down here but it's snowing tonight so the coal fire is now on. I'm trying out my new magazine for the first time. Can't wait to see how it works!

I was planning on starting the new and improved Lil' Heater tonight but I did some snow prep instead. I bought a 40lb bucket of salt and gassed up the new snowblower. I guess the stove will have to wait until Saturday. The temp is dropping down to thirty degrees tonight.

I lit the match on the Mark II last night. We are having snow showers and a 40* high today. We woke up toasty this morning and didn't hear the whole house furnace. Yeah! Lisa

It's only 20 degrees outside here this morning. We were originally supposed to get up to an inch of snow today, but the weather guru's seem to have called it off overnight. No complaints from me. Enjoying my staycation and listening to the coal boiler firing. Glad I never shut down (sans for cleaning).

Only used 10 KWH of electricity in the past 24 hours. Would have been more like 140 KWH if we were still heating with electricity. I still remember one February from years past when we were hit with a bill for a bit more than 6,000 KWH for the month. At todays rates that month alone would have set us back $870. Gotta love coal.

You've got your KW down there to my level. Good job. Ive stayed under 300 for the last 2 months with an electric water heater. Its a challenge but can be done. Now my well house heater will be running so it will be over that. 6000 KW, Wow.

Well, I too gave in, and fired up the Surdiac. It sat for about a week, loaded with paper and wood, waiting for the temps to plummet. I guess if you call lo temps in the high 20s and daytime high of 42* "plummeting", and a few "very" faint snow flakes blowing around, then that was the final straw. The girls left to do some shopping, so I knew I had a couple hrs to play.
It was a smokey start, getting the draft going, but after a couple attempts, had a raging wood fire w/ tons of draft. Almost .2 on my manometer. (Never seen that high B4, on my stove.) I still can't believe how influential it is, to open a window or door, to keep the initial draft, and fire lit. I did it to relieve the smokey house, and the fire took off. When the smoke cleared, and I shut my frt door, the fire started to die almost immediately. So I cracked open my frt window, and that was what kept me going. (Still trying to remember all these tips).
Anyway, after an hr or so, the hopper was full of coal, the bed is red, and the temps were climbing. It'll take a few hrs or more to get everything settled in, but I guess I can say, the season has started. It's a little early for me, but what the hey, we're only talking a few extra bags to be burning. I wanted to wait for thanksgiving, but couldn't hold out.
