Darn it... I bought a brand new pair of gloves this year but didn't notice they were a couple inches shorter than my previous pair. I'll be shopping for welding gloves that cover more of my forearms. I had the smoke curtain propped up and bumped it while brushing the fire box. It musta been kinda hot.

Lee do you see any real benefit from the smoke curtain? I took mine out a day after running it lol it's always in the way!

Right, I can hear the conversation now, joeq wrote:Ahhh. Another "battle-scar" to tell the grand kids about.
"What was the scar from, Papa?"
"Well, I burned myself on the coal stove, many years ago when it was legal to burn stuff like wood and coal to heat our homes with.. "
"Coal? What's that?"
Ya know, I was really close to taking mine off too. It does tend to be in the way. Trouble is I couldn't get the nuts to turn and getting the drill out wasn't convenient at the moment. I do make use of it though. When I shake and rake, I keep the load door open to reduce air flow thru the coal bed. This cuts down on fly ash accumulation in the flue pipe/chimney system. I've noticed that if I shake with the smoke curtain propped up, fly ash will roll out the top of the load door. With the curtain down, fly ash doesn't roll out the top. While having the load door open reduces air flow thru the coal bed. So basically, it just helps with dust reduction in the basement.hotblast1357 wrote:Lee do you see any real benefit from the smoke curtain? Valentine's weekend cold blast. How poetic, right? Got down to -10F last night.
Currently -8F and 73 in the house. Currently entering the 13th hour since last tending. The 1537 holding fast at 425 over the load door and pumping 135 degrees thru the warm air supply..
Forecast is a high of -2 for today and then -17 tonight..
That will be a 36 hour (or more) stretch of below zero.
That does not happen very often around here. Maybe once every few years at most.

Can't speak for Lee but mine sure does. It's 7 degrees here in the Bluegrass state and the Hotblast has been 500 degree plus since 6 am. 74 inside. She's been holding steady in the 520s for an hour or so. That's unusual for bit. It's usually in a steady fall until it gets in the lower 400s or upper 300s.joeq wrote:Does your furnace seem to like running in this frigid weather Lee? Seems my little guy does.
Of course the mano is showing .16.
7 degrees I'm sure isn't that cold for you guys but us sissys in the south are not use to that. Looking for 4" to 8" of snow tomorrow too. The first measurable snow of this season.

Like KY's, mine recovers faster and burns hotter due to the minor increase in draft. It's running around -.055 in these cold temps. My normal draft is .03joeq wrote:Does your furnace seem to like running in this frigid weather Lee? Seems my little guy does.

My forearms were getting burned from the intense radiation off the fuel bed during tending while raking. I come up with this simple solution for now. I cut the toes off this old pair of socks to cover my forearms.

-20 forecast for tonight. I'm gonna pull the air filter in the convection handler for a little added air flow.
Anyone think that would be a bad idea?

Come on Lee you know we need factual data to justify this non-conformity! More air out means more air in and where is this air coming from...there is no such thing as free air!! ..........oh I tried to do my best Larry impersonation and started laughing sorryLightning wrote:-20 forecast for tonight.
