I have an EMF 520 worm feed coal boiler. I have water in first floor radiators. But can not get air or water out of 2nd floor radiators. I believe the system is not replenishing water. What would cause this?

Welcome to the Forum!

We will need a little more info first;

Is this steam or hydronic heat?

Is the second floor on a different zone than the first floor?

Does the system have an auto-fill valve?

Assuming it is hot water you need enough water pressure inside the boiler to raise the water to that height. Usually about 12 pounds is enough for most houses.

There is a valve, backflow preventer and water inlet regulator...near expansion tank...maybe.

Did you try to bleed air up on 2nd floor?

This furnace is 50 years old. There is a back flow preventor and an inlet regulator. I really think one of these two have failed

Probably the auto feed is blocked. It happens a lot because a lot of solids get stuck in the strainer. I always put a manual bypass on incase this happens in the middle of winter so you can get it going. The other issue is where did the water go it is a closed loop so you must have a leak somewhere

Thank you sleeper 735. It was the auto feed. I had my brother come and replace auto feed and back flow preventer. System refilled and we have heat throughout house. Although it is a very good question of where the water went. This is actually my parents house. And my father said he hasn't got any water out of 3rd floor in years.
