Simon, I'm wonder how your making out regulating the temp on the Wings. I found that I could have all the vents shut and the stove would still run pretty hot even with the pipe damper closed. I've placed 6 stove bolts in the air hole just below the front door. This seems to allow more air regulation through the vents. Now I'm maintaining the temps I want. Mike
Every day I sign on here and every day I learn something new. Sunny Boy is helping me make a set of gas rings. For now, WIlson seems to have blocked off those vents with cement and as running the stove low is important to me, I think I will leave it there for now. First serious light up is probably Tuesday but right now the front of the house is barely holding, so it may be this morning. I'll let you know.

So is it looks or substance?
Lemme put it to you this way......when I designed and built my house, I built what I wanted. I was young and dumb but I built what I wanted to look at for the rest of my days.

Somewhere in there I kinda didn't think a bunch about heating it. It's the farthest thing from the ideal heating situation that you can have. It's and all open two story full cathedral. LOTS of open space that needs to heat up.

My old woodstove ran hard and when called upon, with it's tongue hangin out at 650F stove top center, it was adequate if you kept after tending to it and kept it full. If the house cooled down when it became cold, it was the better part of a day getting the house warm again.

This #8.......40ft from the heater......I can make the thermometer click up a tenth of a degree every few minutes. Literally.
It was 67 in the house earlier (we had left for most of the day and I took my best guess at primary settings before we left and I guessed incorrectly). I had the place back to 72 (again, 40ft from the stove) in no time. I could NOT do that with the woodstove.

To answer your question.....it's purdy but it's a friggin' BEAST.

I am sure that in the hands of a seasoned coal burner it's much more of a beast than I think it is....but I am learning.

I like the feeling of being in complete control of my indoor climate. The old woodstove did what it could but 20 degrees outside (or below), it struggled. We've had some low 20's so far and I have no problems making the indoor temps whatever I want them to be.

BEST PURCHASE EVER!!!!!!.

,,,,and Panch, big daddy looking on just in case we are overmatched this winter.

Life is good, it's as simple as that. The finial off being polished for the opening act.... exit stage left giggling hysterically.

Where's WB's finial?. Looks like he's wearing a tight bolo hat. :D (might want to stuff some rope gasket in the finial pin hole).

I can see the big ole pig over in the corner....both look really nice.

You should be more than set for whatever old man winter throws your way.

If they figure out those foot rests stay fairly cool, they could have those off in no time...think of the fun they could have :D
My 16th month old managed to knock one off the Herald, thankfully he didn't get burned...BUT
Enjoy the kids and the stoves
