Looks normal for a stoker that isn't doing much work.

Thank you for the feedback rob. So basically the more I use it the more efficiently the coal will burn?

sometimes you'll always have some unburnt, sometimes it ride along the sides and doesn't get burnt, or it's not really coal, some other impurity.

Looks pretty good tho.! :)

You can always Do a search on here, there's always some other threads on topics like this.

Here's one.

Can you tell by the weight of the ashes when you go to dump them? I know when I go to dump my ashes I can tell a weight difference in the ash pan when I have alot of unburnt coal. I'am going to have to weigh a 5 gallon bucket of coal ash and compare it to a 5 gallon bucket of unburnt coal, come up with the weight difference if that will mean anything,,,, ;)

The ratio for determining ash percent is derived by dividing the weight of the ash by the weight of the coal burned to get that ash. So in short it is what is left after getting the heat out of the black gold. :)

As already stated there will be some black, however if the ash weight is higher than 20% of what has been put in the hopper it bears further investigation, if you screen the ash and get the hard pieces that didn't burn you can see if they will burn by placing them on top of the burn area of the grate, not very scientific but at least is an indicator.

Not sure if this helps the discussion at all but thought I would give it a shot.
