Does anyone know anything about this Herald?
I've requested some detailed pictures and she will send them to me tomorrow but... I just can't wait so I figured I'd put it out there
The base looks like a bb style but the back pipe looks off to me. Maybe its not original?? The ash pan looks new which makes me wonder if its been refurbished somewhat recently.
I'm just wondering if I should take the time to go look at this (its only 45 min)

The little hook type latch for the little clinker door is broken. Nice big ash pan. Need more pictures but is possibly of the suspended fire pot type which would be desirable.

Here are the rules. If there are missing pieces, don't buy it. That is not a common stove and missing pieces will not be had. If there are any cracks in the base castings (square part on the bottom) do not buy.
If the stove is complete and there are no serious cracks, then this would be a very desirable stove.
This may be a base heater or it may be a good quality cylinder heater with an indirect back pipe. In that case it is almost like the Modern Oak except it is brick lined all the way inside from the top to bottom.
In any case this is a coal only stove. It's not meant for wood at all.
Be choosy and patient.
300 bucks or less. If not, say thank you very much and walk away.

Hi Auntievintage, the stove has dropped $100.00 and was used as a wood burner for quite some time. I asked for pic's of the inside and grate to no avail and I couldn't justify the trip but you are much closer. The stove has been for sale for a few months and that means 275.00 is only a starting point! ...........show her 150.00 and load it! There is a reason it's still on craigslist.

If it's not a base heater model, are you still considering it even though you have the 116 ?

From the position of the rear damper, I would be willing to bet this is a base heater. Indirect back pipe models have the damper IN the pipe itself. A base heater has the damper BETWEEN the stove body and the back pipe.

I may, depending on the condition. $275 would give me a nice project if there aren't any cracks/missing parts. I could always use it in the workshop and put the new (rougher) 116 at camp. We have a woodstove there and I want to switch over to coal.Sunny Boy wrote:If it's not a base heater model, are you still considering it even though you have the 116 ?

I still don't think I'll take the time out of the weekend unless she gets me the pics tomorrow as promised. We are supposed to be working on the coal bin this weekend. I'll keep you posted.michaelanthony wrote:Hi Auntievintage, the stove has dropped $100.00 and was used as a wood burner for quite some time. Let's hope William wins his bet. Wouldn't that be wonderful for your planned small place. A good price, not much foot print for plenty of heat, and it sips coal !auntievintage wrote:I may, depending on the condition. $275 would give me a nice project if there aren't any cracks/missing parts. I talked to this ladies daughter last week sometime, asking for inside pics, before making the 'road trip'. She said"no problem". I left her name, telephone, and E-mail. All I got here is 'crickets'. If I hear from her, great, if not, oh well...........
I have developed a case of 'base-heater-itis', but I would like a 'small' stove. This Herald looked(pics) smaller than a lot of the other stoves I see forum members installing.
Cheers

So I couldn't help myself... we brought her home yesterday.
She's a small #10 but we are re-finishing the "attic" (an unfinished portion of the second story) next year to turn into our bedroom and the main chimney just happens to come up directly in the center of the 26'x22' room. I think this will be perfect up there until we downsize later on.
There are no cracks in the base. The nickel trim ring was broken in half at some point and someone did a fantastic job of repairing it.
The clinker door latch will have to be repaired.
It is a suspended fire pot and the grates look fantastic.
Everything appears tight and operable.
Someone built a very nice, new ash pan but I think they made it too big as it fits so snugly that it looks like it will impede air-flow.
The cap is missing for the top of the rear pipe, but I suppose we can just cap it for now.
I was hoping to find a large BB for our main source of heat, but the search is still on. I'm beginning to think that we'll have to have our front chimneys repaired/replaced at some point because I can see where this is headed.
My name is Amanda, and I am a stoveaholic.
But, after dragging my husband around to look at two different BB's this week, I think its safe to say that he has the bug now too.
We made quite a few trips out to the garage last night just to look at her. Kinda like when the kids were first born and we'd sneak up to their cribs to watch them sleep!

I had requested pics too, which she never delivered on. She doesn't have internet at her house and I don't think her daughter was much help to her.D-frost wrote:I talked to this ladies daughter last week sometime, asking for inside pics, before making the 'road trip'. And, you never know, we may yet come across one that's better sized for our house and we won't *need* this one?!

Amanda,
Good to hear you made a deal. What is the diameter of the firepot? If I find one larger than what I need, we may possibly do some 'horse trading'(LOL). I have a 'Chubby' that works 'super good', so we'll be warm this Winter. Take care.

I'll try to get some pics & measurements tonight.
In any case, at least its safe & sound for now.
