it makes my stove go real low on the fire in the box..... So in the evening I draw done heat in boiler and open ash door and a small fan to pick it up some. Can't wait for steady LOW temps 30's or lower.

We almost hit 60 here.
Since learning how easily and hot it burns, I keep bags of the Tractor Supply Kimmel's for quicker re-lighting and for keeping the range running at cooking temps on warm days like this.
Loaded the range up with Kimmel's this afternoon and it has no problems from too-slow draft. Acts like it's 30 outside.
BTW, happy anniversary Don. I see you joined here a couple of hours before I did.

Got caught with my draft down yesterday. I was running the stove at minimum with a half charge and was away from home all day and into the evening. It got up to 70 here during the day and with the stove at below idle with a low charge it looked really sad when I got home. Only a spot the size of a grapefruit left and it was pale. Not orange, not robust, a pale pink. Ruh Roh!!!
I went outside and got some small twigs and got a fire going on top of the spot. Then added some more wood but it's old old partly rotten cherry wood that didn't burn worth a flip. It used to burn when I was burning wood but it's sitting and rotting now. It did make some coals and by 8 last night I added a scoop of pea coal. That kinda sat there but the pea on the bottom started catching. I filled the fire box completely and expected it to be out this morning.
I got up to a nice orange glow on one side of the firebox. I opened the ash pan door and let it develop some blues. Then I added a small pail of pea and it is catching nicely all the way across now. I have dancing blue ladies all the way across. Time to add coal, shut the ash door and let it build.
Just in time for the temps to drop tomorrow to a high of 39 and a low of 25.
Brrr..... BRING IT ON!!!

That shouldn't really be necessary, the baro will stay closed on it's own if draft gets weak.Olllotj wrote:I adjusted the baro all the way over so that I could make it through yesterday, it worked great.

I didnt get much snow, maybe an inch. Some freezing rain when it started. Snow hit hard about 100 miles north of me. Just cold and wind, lots of wind. I saved some for you guys, ha ha
What a difference two days makes!! Outside it's 30 and it's 76 downstairs in the LR and DR. It's 69 in the kitchen which is the coldest room in the house. It's 70 in the upstairs bedrooms and bathroom. And I only have the stove at about 50% on full pea coal.
Nice.....
Nice.....
