Hot Air Coal Stoker Furnace: Keystoker Koker
Coal Size/Type: Rice
Other Heating: Propane Forced Air

Post by Vernoncoaler » Wed. Nov. 12, 2014 11:07 pm

So when to clean and get the stove ready for fire up and found that at the end of last season I must have had a hopper fire and melted the cam and nylon screws. While replacing cam and screw I noticed that there was what looked like cement that was broken just below where the hopper sits on top of the stoker. So I took the hopper off and found that the stoker is warped where it meets the stove its self. Do you think this can be straighten, or do you think it will be ok to run it the way that it is, or should I just replace it?
Any thoughts would be great.

Sorry to hear about your discovery. Not fun.
Have you determined why you had the hopper fire?
There is supposed to be a rope gasket between the stoker unit flange and the back of the furnace. If that's missing, it may be the reason. I can't see any gasket in your photo. Mine actually overhangs the stoker flange a bit
Here's a photo:

Another cause may be excessive draft, especially with little coal in the hopper.
Are you using a manometer?
I hope this is some help to you.

On the sides yes can see the gasket just like yours. I think the hopper fire was caused by running it out of coal at the end of last season. I do have a manometer and try to keep the draft right around .04 (mine is a direct vent).
Do you think it should be replace or do you think I could fill the gap with cement or a hi temp silicone?

Furnace cement may do the trick for a while. Eventually it may harden and separate from the furnace. I'm guessing that's where the cement you found came from when you removed the hopper.
The best way to do it is to pull the stoker unit, straighten the plate as best you can and install a new rope gasket. I believe the gasket goes across the back of the furnace just below the stoker unit upper mounting studs. That bent plate may allow an air gap, even with a new gasket.

Mine warped when I had a hopper fire two yrs. ago. I hammered it as straight as I could and put it back together. Its been fine ever since.
