I think I've finally reached coal stove utopia. This year I've started playing with different ratios of pea and nut coal mixed together. The Oak 40 has been averaging 500 on the barrel and 150 on the pipe. As I type it's 24 deg. out and 70 deg. in the house. Little cooler upstairs. Perfect for sleeping. Same fire since I relit after my sisters wedding 11/9. I think these numbers are pretty respectable seeing how the stove is in the basement with a forty foot chimney above it, and vented into a 8 by 10 flue. Temp controlled by primary dampers, indirect back pipe damper and MPD. Really impressed with the the Kimmel this year. For the newer coal burners (myself included) out there don't be afraid to experiment and there's ways to deal with chimneys that draft like a steam locomotive. Just remember there were no Baro's or S/S liners 100 years ago. Everyone stay warm. Matt

I assume you have the triangular coal grates ? If so, any problems with the pea coal falling through the grate gaps ?

You are a railroad man so figuring out a stove should be easy for you.
