Hand Fed Coal Stove: Jotul 507

Post by merlinpearl » Thu. Nov. 20, 2014 4:41 pm

Hello, I am new to the coal game and have been fortunate enough to get my hands on a Jotul 507. Is there anyone out there who could tell me the best sized coal to burn in this stove, and about how much coal per day they would expect to burn in the winter using this stove in a well insulated house?

Thanks

Coal burn rate will vary according to outside temperature, the colder it is outside, the more draft suck you will have and the more coal you will burn, and vice versa when it is warm. If you are around the stove , sometimes it is better to feed a 5 or 6 pound at a time, if you work near it , like in a shop or something.
To start it, all I use are a few, 3, old 2x4s, cut to 5 or 6", and I split them up with a hatchet, light some paper and chuck the pcs in, let the wood get to max flame, 2 min approx, then just a couple pounds sprinkled in, wait a min, then a couple more pounds, I use those little fireplace shovels, at 1 or 2 pounds per shovel. Let this small amt catch , bottom door open , but "do not leave it like this" , "stay with it" during light time, this is important, "Never Leave a stove with any door open". Once the small amt of coal is caught , you can fill it 1/2 or full, to its 15 pound cap. shut the bottom door, and set top and bottom vents 2 to 3 turns open from closed. At this volume capacity, if it is cold, I would get 8 or 9 hrs,, if it was moderate , more time for burn, one warm day I got 22 hrs and it did relight, rare. But if I fed it at 9 or 10 pm, I would need to shake and feed it at 6am, shaking requires a good 60 to 100 turns, I would pretend it is my workout to core strength. Expect 350 to 400f with a magnet therm on top. 500 is getting hot. The hotter it is the quicker it burns. Nut will burn most common, however stove coal is fun, but I usually start it with nut. It is a great stove, I also like the crane coal cooker. I just switched over to an sf150/hxl. So I do have a 507 for sale in NH., that I will post soon.
If you really burn hard, expect to fill it , 3 times a day, morning, 5 pm, and then 9 or 10 pm. probably 40 pounds per day if it is cold, less if it is moderate, I hope this helps, ask any more questions, if you have them, R

This the stove rated at 45,000 BTUs ? I f so, I would think that if it eats 50 lbs a day, it would be at the high end of its consumption rate

Thank you alpineboard for your advice. I really do love this little stove and having the knowledge on how to use it from you will be invaluable this winter! No need to try and figure it out from scratch! I will buy the nut coal like you said, vs. pea.
