I pull my mano probe out every day and tap it on the side of the side to make sure it's free. Sometimes everytime I load

Disclaimer: I have never burned Bituminous coal. I have heard that it is quite full of volatiles and smokes a lot when first loading. Since you just loaded the stove before this happened, could it be the coal was just giving off too much smoke that it could not all go out the chimney fast enough? I have heard people say that when they load up the stove with Bituminous, they have to load just a little at a time until the volatiles burn off. Did you load it all the way up completely at one time?
Randy
Edit: What size is your flue and chimney? If you do not have a clogged chimney, I suspect this was the problem.

How ironic another member Larryfoster is on another thread:
Cold Air Return. Do I Need It?
He is also burning bituminous from "run of the mine" Berlin just posted a good point that stated you need an 8 inch flue pipe to burn bituminous because a 6 inch pipe will clog.
He is also burning in a Hot blast 1557.

Pipes are all clear. When I took the cap off at the tee air blows in the basement hard. It has always drew air even with the fire out.

Please clarify, are you saying the air hits you in the face when you take the cover off the Tee?Jared43758 wrote:Pipes are all clear. When I took the cap off at the tee air blows in the basement hard. It has always drew air even with the fire out.

Sounds like a steady and pronounced back-draft. But why?

I have had the same chimney setup for this will be the 4th year and nver had a problem. There is not a bit of wind blowing outside, not a leaf moving and air is suckimg in instead of going out. I don't get it. When I took the cap off and shined a light in my pipe I could see fine particles of soot blowing in the basement.

And I never said it always does it. I said it has never done this. It usually has a little draft even if there is no fire

For some as yet unknown reason your house itself has become a bigger chimney than your chimney, and the house draft is overpowering it and forcing it to work in reverse. Open a window in the basement wide open and then check the chimney draft.Jared43758 wrote:I have had the same chimney setup for this will be the 4th year and nver had a problem. Does the house have a ridge vent?

Yes. I'm saying cold air blows in my face when I take the cover off and no wind outside. Like its drafting backwards
