Turned up the CoalTrol to a feed rate of 28 and after a few minutes this stove was creating an ungodly amount of heat.

What should I do?

I'm just happy to own this stove (provided we can still get coal in another several years)

Why wouldn't you be able to get coal in the future?

ungodly amount of heat.
In which case that is Larrys dept. However, if it is as hot as hell, that is my area of expertise. :D

Is unburnt coal turning up in the ash bin. If not turn it up some more until it does (in my case about MAX=32). Now you will know the stoves limits when it gets really nasty.

The full power mode as you note above must be performed after a inside cleaning to max out the heat transfer .

Kinda like a down and dirty Dodge Viper at 160 mph :D

US, this is not a calorimetry experiment. Cleaning the c rap off is of course always good idea and should be done regularly but c rap recollects in hard use. So I recommend just testing the stove limits if you can stand the heat. :D
