Best option is the opposite...burn pellets in a coal stove. Alaska 140 auger, underfed stoker.

Pellet stove do not provide any of the requirements for coal burning.
Cast iron grates
air from below
fire bricks
deep fire pot
Think of that poor little direct-vevt fan used for pellets, how to ever start a coal fire, control the fire and keep it lit.???

I think coal would bind up the auger in a wood pellet stove. Ash would also be a serious problem. Coal has approximately 10 times more ash than wood.

I'm burning 1/3 rice coal and 2/3 pellets mixed in my shop, It burns ok and does provide additional heat output but more cleaning than with just pellets. Not something you could do if you were not there to take care of the additional ash every couple hours. It's a Magnum Baby Countryside corn and pellet stove and really burns corn well and pellets just ok. I bought it when corn was cheap. I don't believe I would want to try just coal , the bottom of fire box wouldn't take the heat and the drop feed wouldn't give a good burn as ash filled the firebox. The sides are cast but the bottom plate is stainless. I did block the air wash system for the door glass to get more air thru the fire box . Next week I'm going to try a 50/50 mix and see what happens. There are 5 heat settings on this stove. I usually run it on 3. Using just pellets the output temp is about 175 degrees give or take. With the coal mix it averages over 200. We'll see how it does next week when it gets cold again. It's 67 here today and a little warm in the house with the Baker coal stove on idle. I ONLY run this stove when I'm in the shop,NEVER unattended.
