Leisure Poconol
Started up my coal stove and having trouble with alarms going off (carbon monoxide). The power vent is working. The coal in hopper is also on fire and hopper is hot. The stove is down until figure the problem. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Did the right thing and shut it down. Open a window, etc...
Wow, sounds like the power vent is pulling Too much air thru the stove, in turn, pulling air down thru the hopper and burning back.
Was it properly adjusted for draft with a draft gauge, or a missing gasket somewhere. ? do you have a baro damper?
Usually, the first fire in the stove will set off the alarms, when everything is burning off and getting up to temperature. BUT, if it's burning back towards the hopper and into the hopper, something is not correct.
maybe post a pic of your setup.

I have operated a Pocono with a powervent for many years and I can't imagine that is the problem. Is the grate seated correctly? I agree the condition is very dangerous and you need to stop until the cause is found. Do you have anyone near you who can help.

Said with respect, your original very brief request for information unfortunately suggests to at least me that you may be somewhat uninformed about the technical attributes of coal burning. If so you may want to consider immersing yourself into the rich tech areas of this forum. By that time you will understand the importance of a barometer and why you need one. Or have a qualified installer install one. You will then understand why you need one. There are other why's and their fixes.
Please read what others have failed with and learned, it is invaluable to helping yourself.
Hats off though to having a CO Detector !

Who did the install? Our powervent includes a Baro damper. Do you have one installed? We recommend a qualified installer always. If someone is unsure, getting a second opinion from someone qualified is a requirement. Let us know what you find.

and with a good pair of snow shoes you should make it in about 2 hours. If you come across Shackeltons body don't forget your camera. Take care, polar bears are hungry this time of the year and magnetic compasses are getting unreliable is Magnetic North is moving 400 miles a year. You should write a book about this trek.I'm 5 miles away p.m. sent with my #, top of page click the envelope!!! Mike.

Is the power vent installed backward ? forcing the exhaust out thru the hopper ? I don't know if that is possible but............birtja wrote:Started up my coal stove and having trouble with alarms going off (carbon monoxide). The power vent is working. Not possible. My vote goes to an unseated/leaking grate and combustion air leaking over the back, heating the coal way too far back and igniting the hopper. It's the only explanation. Time will tell.Is the power vent installed backward ? forcing the exhaust out thru the hopper ? I don't know if that is possible but............

I hope all is well. Hopefully we get an update soon we have plenty of guys and gals on the bench waiting to go in.
I took feeder out and replaced new gaskets under hopper and end of feed. I changed the switch controlling speed of power vent. Started stove and waiting for it to calm down. the feed is at 73 and was 99% when started. Thanks for advice from all and Mike I have your number.

There should be a legal disclaimer on this forum stating that the opinions expressed are from old crusty men with a touch of Altzheimers......or would it be "crusty old" rather than "old crusty" ?
