Hot Air Coal Stoker Stove: Harman magnum
Coal Size/Type: rice

Post by 10bushmich10 » Fri. Nov. 28, 2014 11:24 pm

Looking to buy this stove as back up to my Harman magnum that needs electricity to operate. I only have one picture. Guy listed it as wood stove but stated it has a grate. Any info would be helpful. Thanks

On the right side at the bottom of the belly and before you get to the base there is a shiny rectangle. That is where a shaker handle would come through the casting if that shiny thing is a metallic cover. However the grate I am seeing in the photo is a wood grate, not a coal grate. If that is indeed a cover over a slot in the casting, then with a round shaker grate you could burn coal.

The stove does look to be in kinda rough shape but if it has no cracks, you can expect to spend at least another hundred on a grate and sealant for the seams. If you want to get it I would negotiate for $50 considering the shape it's in.

Fast reply. They guy is only asking 50$ but if it needs a new coal grate I'd rather not bother trying to find one. I'll keep looking. I use my magnum stoker as a radiant stove with out the fan on. Much nicer heat and no noise. Was thinking to try a pot belly stove that was designed to be a radiant heater to start with.

I would go look at it if it's not too far away. Too many unknowns with just one picture.

Price is right if it's useable.

For $50 you probably will only lose half when you cart it to the scrap yard.

Keep looking, but not for a pot belly. These were never intended for a long slow fire.

OK. So there is another coal stove I was looking to get but don't know the BTU output. It's a umco no 28. It about 12 inches wide and 24 inches tall. Guy wants 195$ for it but it seems to be in good condition. It would serve as emergency heat. Something I'd pull it out of th shed if needed.

Too small. You need at least a 14 inch pot which would still be fairly easy to move with a hand truck provided stairs are not a problem. Too expensive also.

If your looking for about the LEAST efficient design of stove for burning coal in, then get a pot belly. I learned that first-hand using them for few years - both small and large sizes.

+1 what Franco and Paul said.

Craigslist is awash in hand fired stoves at the moment.
