I am assuming below the MPD so I know what the stove sees and was going to do the same with probe thermometer. With a Crane 404 what am I shooting for as a reading?

Yup.

It's not just the stove but your chimney system too, so there's no hard rule for a brand/model of stove. Most seem to wind up around .03 to .04 for the best MPD setting to keep heat in the stove without restriction the draft so much that it slows it down.

If your chimney system draft is on the weak side, you may need to give it more than .04.

i might add that if your chimney draft is capable of showing -.04 on your Mano. it's plenty good enough.

glad to see you moving forward, I think those 404's are super cool.

Painted today grates ready to deburr pivot points tomorrow install glass in door assemble ash pan door new gaskets for both as well. Will take a pic of it finished it has taken way too long. Hinge pins welded back in that were missing. Working on getting a couple of big farm boys to do the heavy lifting wood stove out coal stove in.

How does the stove know how tall or short the chimney is beyond what the draft available is?

Will the manometer survive living 16 inches to the side above from the stack above MPD? It would be good to have it at eye level and how do you connect as the hose 1/8 at best and generally use a 1/4 probe. Hose adapter?

Have the sweep coming tomorrow to give the chimney a scrub so very little wood residue to think about. There will be a little as paint calls for a short 500F burn to cure paint then let cool so there will be that open windows and all. So that is where I am. I sure hope the 404 can stand a steady diet of 600 to 650 stove top as it needs to be that from prior wood stove experience.

BTW is DCrane ok emailed a couple times and no response. Sure hope all is ok for him.
