dodecahedron w/ 13 inch "edges" as a barrel sitting on a four square cube housing the fire pot, ash and base chambers. full door access to base chamber for cleaning.
back of the dodecahedron cut off with the base edge parallel to the vertical line formed by the back wall of the cube.
this will provide 5 faces of pentagon framed windows, one of these will be hinged to feed the stove, take the firepot out etc. there will also be 2 other faces that will have glass but not full pentagons.
16" round fire pot with triangle grates and support cassette. ash pit located check damper. exhaust surrounded double heater passage.
top filled hopper / magazine. bi metal thermostatic primary air control, fixed automatic secondaries.
card board model is at 60" over all right now.

Have to lift the coal above 5 feet to fill the hopper? Hard on my back!KingCoal wrote: top filled hopper / magazine ... 60" over all right now.

Steve,
seriously though, I envy you having the time to undertake such a project . I have to say that when I first heard about baseburners I started thinking about how one might build one using repurposed bits for this or that. One thing I thought of was using a brake drum from a semi trailer for a burn pot, somehow utilizing the stud holes for mounting the grate system in place. anyhow ,Im looking forward to pix of you project as you progress. How about a look at the cardboard model before you "fire it"
regards,
waldo
Please be careful where you test fire.KingCoal wrote:card board model is at 60" over all right now.

This is great. This is public forum and I hope that the box makers will just keep making boxes because they think we are a bunch of crack pots. Sometimes it's not so bad when you are thought of as one. I should know.

as per our last exchange by PM, this latest update and description is about as close to disclosure that there is going to be until I get my legal stance established.wsherrick wrote:This is great. I look forward to it. Any how the shape you are describing is very similar to the Globe Base Burners that were all the rage during the late 1870's and on into the 1880's. The globe heaters had windows for the complete 360 degrees of the combustion chamber. They are odd looking but super cool at the same time.

JJerry,
great to have you following along.
i wonder if you could do me a favor ?
i'd like to get a sense for the surface area of your Sunburst stove. it would be close enough for what I need if we reduced the stove to 2 rectangles. one from the bottom of the base chamber up to the top of the tea pot trivet on the back and the other from there up to the base of the finial.
just get close to the largest width X depth X height for each one, that will cover all the fancy molded surfaces, wings, heads etc. ect.
also can you give me the diameter of the bottom of your fire pot ?
thanks,
steve

Remember to keep around that 1-27 ratio of grate to radiant surface!!! That is a ratio that has survived the scrap yard for many a good functioning stove.KingCoal wrote:JJerry,

yes sir, right now my ROUGH estimate of the Sunburst is 30 s.f. which is well with in the realm of proving the 27:1 ratio once again.blrman07 wrote:Remember to keep around that 1-27 ratio of grate to radiant surface!!! i may need to pare down the dodecahedron to get under the wire.
my conversion showed I can get away with a bit more but I don't know what limit is. 10%, 25%, who knows ?
thanks,
steve

I'll work on that this weekend. It's supposed to be nice this afternoon so I want to work outside on the chimney for a while. Maybe I can get a few other little jobs done out there too.
