these frames are not hinged and won't open.

i'll have to run the coal down in the fire pot now and then to clean the glass from the inside. which won't be difficult due to the top load door being right above them.

i'll get a couple more frames and look it over from all angles. i'll have a couple weeks before i'll need to decide anything.

My vote would be to put as many windows above the coal bed as possible

I like that arrangement best,if one was to sit dead center in front of the stove with that setup,it would allow a three windowed view of the glow. :D & it allows those to each side to see the glow as well.

One port would more closely resemble its cousin.

Talk about "Steampunk"!!! That's is very Kool :punk:

If I may......

If you add say 2 inch wide fins the length of the barrel (top to bottom) all the way around, as practical, you will greatly add to its heat transfer area. It will also add to the Techno look :D

if I count the transfer tracks and I should since they are outside the barrel, I have already added 8.29 sq. ft. of new radiant surface to the stove, I think i'm about max'd out for this one.

there is however another feature that I haven't discussed yet, if it works out as I hope I think you will like it alot.

clue, think Darth Vader's cape :o

I'm in for the 3 ports if you are keeping score.

1 was ok, 2 was a no-go.

thanks Don, 1 was just "ok" for me too on the basis that it gave a nod to the classic look but only superficially. 2 were better from a strictly technical aspect but didn't have anything in the looks department.

3 is the way it's going to go. already have the other 2 frames ordered.

OK, I have to say - Iike the three windows!

I guess I couldn't visualize them but putting them on, they look a lot better than just one...

just back from the fab shop, they will have the transfer channels done by the end of the week.

when the owner saw what I did with the barrel he was shocked, said that he could have drawn all those opening into the software and laser cut them during the original rolling and welding process.

it took me a minute to explain that at that time I didn't know where they were going to go. then he was really shocked to understand that I've just been day dreaming it up as I went. :o

he's really interested in doing all the barrels and other work I can bring him.
