Just to complete the thought, a very similar question is what led into the parable of the Good Samaritan.

I would contact the guy and set up a time to pick up the stove if still available tomorrow. Many times I have heard from buyers on my C-List ads and they never show up. I always say I will not hold anything pending a sale, the first with the money that shows up gets it.

A comment of paying a price well over asking and making1200 mile journey could may be the begining of a scam.

I had a scammer contact me when I was selling some furniture one time.

Scammer starts a dialog that is very appealing and little by little by emails adds a small twist to keep you going further but changes how the pick-up and or shipping can be coordinated.
Next thing he wants to send more than enough money for you to pay the shipper when they show up. Scammer overnites you a larger sum check to cash and keep your agreed price and a portion to pay the shipper and send back to scammer the over or excess amount. I refused to proceed on receiving any check...but it still arrived. That is where I ended it.

What the scam is, that you cash the check, then send the money he requested back to him. And in a few days your bank wants ALL the money back because the check is BAD.

You never transferred the for sale goods, but you are out the cash.
They are pretty slick.
FYI. This gets tried ALOT with antique cars and parts for sale. So much so that my Car Club has a warning of this scam on the home page of their website

want the stove, show up there this morning and flash the money your willing to commit to it and walk at the first refusal.
An old trick. In the world of auctions it's called "shilling", or "using a shill". When using a shill, it's usually a friend, or relative, who is only helping bump up the price.

I don't necessarily think it's a scam. Like Jim, I contacted the seller earlier, upon seeing the ad. I asked a question, got a quick reply. Asked for another specific photo, he said he'd send it after work in the evening. Later I got a reply saying someone was willing to pay more than asking, and was going to see it Sunday; he would let me know Sunday if it was gone.
What I don't like is early contacts being bumped by someone offering more money, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

They are definitely out there but you have to be quick!

This is another Grand Argand posted on Craigslist late yesterday morning. It was sold and picked up by late afternoon. :D

I advertised a lathe a few years back, and a buyer sent me a deposit by PayPal to hold it for a week. It worked out well and I sold him a few more things.

The question is, is PayPal a good safe way to accept a down payment or even payment in full?

Some say no. I've seen claims where there was a dispute filed by the 'buying' party, and PayPal locks the bank account of the seller until the dispute is settled.

I use Pay Pal whenever possible. It helps eliminate more places for my credit card info to be out on the web.

I had a problem with a seller in the UK. The seller took payment through Pay Pal. After more than enough time went by and my emails being ignored by the seller, I notified PayPal. The seller responded back the next day and followed through on the deal quickly.

I do the same, for the same reason.
