Ive purchased 9 tons so far this year. Looking at the coal bin, I have 2-3 tons left. I expect it to last the "heating season" Started the fire week before halloween to start heating the garage. Middle of november I started heating the shop and DHW. Burned through the first 2-3 tons kinda quickly until I realized I had a problem needing solving. Fortunately it was during a time under a lighter load. (shop is heated via concrete slab) First year using a coal boiler, had a bit of a learning curve.
House is using indirect water heater, and my electric bill at the house has been reduced so much, I may put a indirect heater in the shop and burn year round and have domestic hot water at both.

Oh I'm sure once I get an indirect online I'm gonna make er work. 2 daughters and the wife makes for high hot water demand. 50 gal electric isn't cutting the mustard anymore.Rob R. wrote:70 lbs per day is peanuts for that VA400...if you ever put a real load on it expect to burn 3 times that.

I have a ton of nut left, but I chickened out and I just ordered another ton. If I have any left over it doesn't go bad over the summer, correct?

Since Oct. 10,2014 we have burnt 10.5 ton thru the boiler. Since Nov.1,2014 we have burnt nearly 2 ton in the Crane.
1830 insulated 2 story farm house that sits out in the open and catches all the wind. New thermal pane windows.
ll Pocono started up October 20, 2014 and as of Feb. 19, 2015 my average has been 60# Blaschak Rice per day keeping the house at a steady 72.
15 bags remain, so if this freezing weather keeps up, I'll need another ton or so.
This has been a rough winter. Lots of below 0 nights and days. Even a few -22 nights.

Down to 16.70 tons stored in the basement...I think I am good for another couple years.
