What was it before the coal stove ?

How much coal did you burn, how much did that coal cost ?

In other words...what is your net savings ?

Not sure how much coal I have burned as of yet. I brought 2 tons. I have more than half left. Maybe a 1¼ tons left. The coal itself was 254 per ton & 60 bucks for delivery.

I included my gas bill, so you can do the math.

Are you using the gas just for utilities now and the coal stove as the main heat or the coal stove as supplemental? I remember the gas days in a house I rented . After that I won't touch the stuff .

I have one utility , electricity, and that's very low . It's good to be a coal burner

Unfortunately Mr. Herald #6 doesn't heat the whole house. Just the entire upstairs and back to the dinning room. My bedroom is on the first floor way in the back of the house. So it has no effect way back there.

Our Nat gas company begs the Public utilities commission ( PUC) for a increase, then starts to charge more in anticipation of that increase, rather than back charge?? Grr, It went up in MAY, just after they went to their summer rates, and now we are in the winter rates and well its way up, first 50 is like .67 here. Its only about 10% less than "Volume" ( heating and 1 or more appliance) propane pricing.
And my Propane 95% eff. condensate furnace, running on natural gas, just Sucks, and blows Warm air at best. The cycles are way longer. Nat gas is WEAK for a forced hot air system, and I only would use in future on a wall style unit or emergency.
Im not really doing coal efficiently yet, but our last gas bill was 200 less, Already. we were at 360 a month last winter ( heat, water heater and dryer) for just two people and dryer only once a week.
Natural gas is only going UP as power companys are forced to use it and more and more is getting compressed for the likes of Train engines ( how sad)
Glad Your Gas bill is way DOWN!!
No surprise bills now, the coal is in the yard...( I buy it by the LT or 1.2 T pallets, which ever is available)

I was thinking the same thing. I would love to have a little Jutol for the back of the house. so that I did not have to have the gas on at all. I wouldn't even have the pilot lit. They really would be wondering what the hell is going on. It sure feel like I'm slapping them in there face.

The difference between the NG that plants are getting is its stuff being fracked out of the mid west and it's being sold cheap. What you get in your local town and cities is controlled by the utility companies that pull NG out of the local resource . Most of these utility companies have been using old lines and equipment for many years that cost a lot to repair and maintain and the cost is directly transferred to the customers . Natural gas IMO is just no good in a house . My electric water heater works perfectly fine and its a lot cheaper than Gas . Have you guys thought of heat pump central air systems with a return over one of your main coal stoves which would allow you to use the fan on the system in the winter to evenly distribute the heat ?

This is exactly what I do. I have my Rheem gas hot air furnace set to just Fan, and I circulate the Coal stove output. I have UV-C in the system and 4 inch thick filters. may as well use that furnace for something good, like REAL hot air!! Its a great idea Smokeyja !! :D

That's awesome ! It's a giant blower basically ;) . My house is only 1287sq ft so my Glenwood 6 can keep it at 70 at really low burns . Plus I never had any central air system in this house . It was heated with only stoves up until about the late 70's when someone had an idea to put baseboard heating in. One winter with those and $400 a month bills and we pulled them out . Nice thing is I have 240v all over the house already now which allowed me to install a 240v AC unit and save $ in the summer . I have a flue in every room still and thank God know one closed any of the chimneys up . This house was stuck in time . Anyways if I ever do find my way into a bigger house or add on in want a central Air system and have it hooked up like that!

I don't think your problem is with Nat Gas. LP would heat the exact same way in that furnace. They are no longer hot air furnaces but warm air furnaces. In obtaining that 95% efficiency they scrub the exhaust for more scavenged heat before it goes out the chimney. That's why you can hold your hand in the exhaust at full bore and get nothing but a wet hand.

Try that with my older LP furnace and you get a burn. You also don't get 95% efficiency with it.

The upside to longer cycles is that your whole house (and it's contents) get warm, not just scorched air and then immediately back to brrrrrrr....
