My Coal delivery man , who is older than my soon to be 62 years suggested something to me for my primary bin where I have to rake my rice coal and I think it would work for nut( which I have burned in a hand fed stove for 30 years until getting stoker boiler) . He said to me you need a 8 inch open grain auger, that is no pipe or conduit it will move the coal until the coal finds it own level and supports itself.
and what I believe that means it a auger used for grain silos to I think transport dried corn kernels. It doenst go in a pipe just in the open space that you may have. I know it will work for moving in my bin my problem is I have yet to find one . I haven't looked too hard but I'm looking for a bargain.

The angle of repose for a 4'-6" elevation lift would take up a lot of floor space.franpipeman wrote:My Coal delivery man , who is older than my soon to be 62 years suggested something to me for my primary bin where I have to rake my rice coal and I think it would work for nut( which I have burned in a hand fed stove for 30 years until getting stoker boiler) . necessity is the mother of invention , invention requires adaptation. I don't have all the details of the bin but I do see the possibility from bin to hopper could be a Square conduit Box,or maybe even a large diameter pipe where compression is reduced and a open end is the hopper. As in my theoretical case I need to think where is the motor going to be mounted and auger supported , and it will require a differential as the auger needs to go slow and motor speeds are fast.

Your talking more of a conveyor than an auger I think. I used to use one of those corn elevators that put the whole ear into the crib. It would be similar to a dairy parlor floor manure system. Pour cement or put plywood with a slot where the conveyor goes, then a conveyor system to where it has to go. Its an old concept but should work fine. Factories use smaller sized setups and that is likely where you could find a used one.franpipeman wrote:necessity is the mother of invention , invention requires adaptation. Or as lightning said, use a 50 gal shop vac....
I am picturing a Red Green style contraption using an old garage door opener complete with remote using empty baked bean tin cans duct taped to the chain running from the nut coal pile to the hopper!!franpipeman wrote:necessity is the mother of invention , invention requires adaptation.

He said 50 HP not gallon. I'm wondering if it is electric or kick start!warminmn wrote:Or as lightning said, use a 50 gal shop vac....

Oops! I knew better too! Maybe the 50 gal is for the conveyor belt! An old maytag engine might run it...coaledsweat wrote:He said 50 HP not gallon. I'm wondering if it is electric or kick start!warminmn wrote:Or as lightning said, use a 50 gal shop vac....

Absolutely, I love the idea of the open auger for moving the nut coal, old timer was spot on. Should work great for your flat bottom bin.franpipeman wrote:necessity is the mother of invention , invention requires adaptation. The adaptation part, you mention, is for the OP to find a way to raise that nut coal to 4'-6" off the floor in order to get it into his hopper.

franpipeman,i have an auger with no motor,it's 6" X about 17' @ $75.00 but this is an auger in a tube ,you could modify to your wishes. Just throwing this out there as 1 possibility for you & a cheap one at that

You'll pay twice the amount it's worth at a dealer.
Get a Lancaster Farmer from some one and look in there, there's also a lot of auctions in your area.
If your handy you should be able to make the $75 one work but you'll need to run the auger slow.
