There are actually quite a few of these boilers around. Most have been retro fitted with oil guns or gas burners. I see fifteen for sale on Craigslist. They command top price for used boilers. There are several options to convert them to coal. The Bit crowd leans on the Iron Fireman, the Wilburt, the Combustioneer to name several. The Anthracite crowd prefers the EFM, the Motor stoker as weapons of choice. The boilers themselves were made at a time when things were made with the appreciation of longevity, workability, and customer satisfaction. They weren't made to be throwaway in five years like many things today.

Thanks for the info Scott,i have heard of all the bit stokers which is strange because I don't follow the bit threads much at all. Those anthracite stokers are pretty much new news to me. This thread will certainly further my education in different boilers & stokers . (conversion stokers) :)

Here's a hopper fed Motor Stoker. Notice the ash removal system where you put two garbage cans under the spouts.

Fast forward 6 years... I was in that building. Was interested to see the heating plant that was put in. It was a ka6 hopper on top. Seemed to be working perfectly for the large amount of hot water needed! I just had to add on to this mystery so anyone that wondered or forgot will know what happened!
